A brief synopsis of life... Born in Carmel, California while Dad was in Post Graduate school in Montery while an officer in the Navy. Stops in Virginia, Maryland, Hawaii and then finally Korea in 1982 when he retired from the Navy after 20 years. He was accepted to Texas A&M University for his PhD so we lived in College Station, Texas for 5 years where I graduated from H.S. and did 8th-12th Grade. 1987 Graduated from A&M Consolidated H.S. 1987-1991 Maine Maritime Academy B.S. Marine Transportation 1991 Accepted commission as Ensign United States Naval Reserve Received USCG 3rd Mates License 1991-1994 Officer US Merchant Marines - US Flag Ships 1994 Married Amy Philbrick - Rye, NH 1994-1997 Vessel Planner ACL - Edison, NJ 1998-2001 "Port Captain" Wilhelmsen Lines - Chesapeake, VA 1999 Daughter Ashley Nicole was born 2001 Son Ian Howard was born 2001-2004 Port Manager Wallenius Wilhelmsen - Charleston, SC 2004-present Operations Manager Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics - Galveston, TX I am happy to be back in Texas as both of my sisters and thier families are still in TX and my wife's brother and his family now live a block away so it's been nice to have them all close by! College I went to college in Castine, Maine - Maine Maritime Academy. For the folks that I went to High School with, think Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, or similarly any of the federally funded military academies (Naval Academy, WestPoint etc)...uniforms, marching, and all that stuff - that will give you an idea of what my college was like. Maine Maritime is a very small school, in a remote summer coastal town in Maine. Let's just say...Expand for more
good education, lousy social life. Women were slim to none, and when we went out, our repuation preceded us...we were cocky, beer drinking a-holes who liked to get into fights. Ah well did I mention it was a pretty good education... I graduated in 4 years, received a degree in Marine Transporation, a commision in the United States Naval Resvere as an Ensign, and a USCG 3rd Mates Unlimited License. Workplace I have been in the shipping industry since graduation from college in one form or the other - either at sea, working ships in the ports, or in the office. After college I worked on US flag ships carrying military cargo (trucks, tanks, Humvees) to and from Saudi Arabia and Somolia. During that time I visited Egypt, South Africa, Germany, Singapore, Panama and countless ports up and down the East, West and Gulf Coasts of the U.S. When I met my future wife, we decided that my being away for 4 months at a time at sea was not exactly healthy for our relationship! So I accepted a shoreside position in New Jersey with Atlantic Container Line. We were there for 3 years and although I liked the company and the job, we weren't too fond of New Jersey. So I accepted a position with Wilhelmsen Lines in Norfolk, Virigina. Wilhelmsen Lines merged with Wallenius Lines while I was in Norfolk, and after about 3 years in Norfolk I was offered a position in the Charleston, SC office. We loved Charleston but another position within the company came up and we decided it was a good career move and as an added bonus it put us in Texas where both of my sisters and thier families still live. I have been with what is now called Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics for 12 years now.
