Douglas's Story

Life We attended Fort Hunt High School in Alexandria, VA for freshman and sophomore years. We then moved to San Diego where we attended Patrick Henry High School for junior and senior years. We left Patrick Henry HS to attend Washington University in St. Louis. We spent 3.5 years there getting a degree in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. I 'spose not much relevant happened, except in the summer of '73 we fell madly in love with Barbara from North Tonawonda when we attended an internship thingy-do at Argonne National Labs near Naperville, IL. She went to Duke, so I worked on getting a summer job in North Carolina during the summer of '74. Sigh, it just wan't meant to be. I got the job, but not the girl. But that's how I came to work for IBM in North Carolina. I graduated in December of '74 ('cause I'm so freakin' smart, although I would have rather spent another semester at Wash U. having fun). Since I couldn't convince IBM to give me a permanent job immediately, I enrolled in graduate school at UNC Chapel Hill. That lasted three semesters until I got tired of going to school and I focused all my energies on IBM. So, I have been working for IBM for the last 30 years, all of it in Retail Store Systems, most of it in customer support for the proprietary operating systems that we have used to run our systems. I got married in 1982 ...Expand for more
and had a son in 1984. While the marriage only lasted about 4 years, the son has lasted 21 years so far! You can see some photos of him playing baseball on my profile. His high school team won the 2002 North Carolina 4A State Championship, the high point of his baseball career. I remarried in 1993 to Pauline, an English lady I met through work. She worked for IBM UK in Retail Store Systems and came to the US for education. She got more than an education, I can tell you, LOL! Anyway, she had/has a wonderful daughter named Susie who is working at the University of Vermont in Burlington. Stephen, by the way, is presently attending undergraduate at NC State U. I have failed as a father, letting him attend NCSU. He has about 1 more year to go and he is currently looking into attending law school. So, here I sit contemplating what to do next in life since it is going to be difficult for IBM to try to steal my pension again, now that I have 30 years with them. Should I stay or should I go, eh? I dabble in cooking, photography, sometimes gardening, and of course my web site which is devoted primarily to cooking with ceramic charcoal cookers and lump charcoal. You can google either "lump charcoal" or "naked whiz" and you'll find my website. I'd love to hear from any old chums from Patrick Henry, Fort Hunt High School or Washington University!
