Harley's Story

Life I left Okinawa in February 1969 and moved to Fort Campbell, Ky. I graduated from high school there on the base that June. The Navy closed their base there and we moved to Jacksonville, Florida. I attended Florida Junior College for a year and was getting drafted, so I joined the Navy. I went to the usual schools and would up at Naval Air Station Albany, Georgia in 1971. I was assigned to a reconnaissance squadron there that flew the RA-5C supersonic aircraft. I made a two cruises to Vietnam, one on the USS Kitty Hawk and one on the USS America. After signing the peace treaty in February 1973 we came back and I made a Mediterranean cruise in 1974, during which I was transferred ashore to Naval Air Facility Naples, Italy. I married Kathy Woods in January 1972 and she accompanied me to Naples. We were there two years when I was selected for an educational program at the University of Texas at Austin and we moved back to Jacksonville. Our daughter Christina Marie was born in Naples in March 1976. I didn't get to go to the college program and was assigned to shore duty in Jacksonville. I returned to sea duty in Attack Squadron 105 which flew the A-7C Corsair II at Cecil Field in Jacksonville. We deployed to the Mediterranean two times aboard the USS Saratoga. My son Harley William II was born in Jacksonville in February 1978. During my tour in 105 is managed to complete a baccalaureate program in Occu...Expand for more
pational Education in an extension campus at NAS Jacksonville. I performed my internship at a local high school while working nights in the squadron. I was then (December 1981) assigned to instructor duty in Memphis, Tenn teaching the newly commissioned Naval and Marine Corps officers aviation maintenance management. I then transferred to Antisubmarine Squadron 28 again at Cecil Field which flew the S-3B Viking aircraft. I was assigned as their Maintenance Control Chief. We made two Mediterranean cruises and two NATO North Atlantic (Artic Circle) cruises aboard the USS Forrestal. I transferred in 1989 to shore duty as the Power Plants Division Chief in their Intermediate Maintenance Dept. I retired from the Navy in August 1991. I then worked various jobs in the civillian world developing and supevising instructional programs, one at a state mental hospital which I found to be extremely rewarding. I moved once again to the Navy and accepted a position as an Instructor and Instructional Developer with the Fleet Aviation Specialized Operational Training Unit US Atlantic Fleet detachment in Jacksonville, Fl. I am still working there anxiously awaiting another and final retirement from work. I have been happily married to Kathy for 32 years now. Christie is now working in Risk Management and Billy (Harley II) graduated from Florida State Univ. last August and is just getting started in his professional career.
