Val's Story

Growing up, I wanted to be an airline stewardess. That would be right up until I passed the height limit! Then I wanted to be a model but I decided to go to college first, so that I would have something to fall back on after I got too old for the modeling industry. Off to college I went, in Grand Junction, CO. Hmmm. Guess who fell in love and got married instead of getting her degree? Yep. Yours truly. Then real life struck, and instead of becoming something glamorous - like a model or a flight attendant, I became an oral surgery assistant. That marriage took me to Topeka, KS and lasted three years. When it ended I moved back to Grand Junction. That leads me to marriage #2. I went to buy an 8-track tape player (snort) for the car I had just bought and ended up with husband #2 (who was the tape player salesman) as well! That marriage lasted five years and took me to Northridge, Simi Valley and San Diego. (I used to wonder if I was going to go through life with each of my marriages lasting two years longer than the last!! I kept my JOBS longer than I kept my husbands!) Now for the good part. Husband #3. The great love of my life. (I should have known he was THE ONE because not only was he my third husband but I was his fourth wife, lol!!!) He had a 12 year old son, who won my heart at "Hello", and whom I adopted when he was 14. We lived in Escondido for seven years and after our son left home, we decided to sell everything we owned and hit the road in a travel trailer. We traveled for nine years and it was amazing. The Road Atlas was our wish book! We spent the most amounts of time living in various parts of Oregon, Arizona and New Mexico. Then, ten years ago, my father lost most of his eyesight to macular degeneration. I tried the old "If you need me, please move up to Oregon, so I can help you." That didn't work. Then I started wishing...Expand for more
I had a brother or sister. THAT didn't work, either. Don and I ended up moving to San Bernardino - the place I had always said I would NEVER return to, and here we are. My father celebrated his 95th birthday a few days ago! Our son married, became a chef, and he and his wife adopted a darling little boy a year ago. Colton is five years old and a huge bright spot in our lives. (Albeit a faraway bright spot, as they live in Oregon.) Don and I celebrated our 25th anniversary in November 2009. I still remember the day, lonnng ago, when we passed our 5th anniversary, looked at each other in amazement and said "We've just broken all of our previous records!!!!" Well, I could go on and on but I don't want you to fall asleep while reading this. I'll end it with my favorite saying: "Life isn't about how to survive the storm but how to dance in the rain". Update: 2009 was quite the challenging year. Don had to have coronary bypass surgery. (Thankfully, he did REALLY well.) I lost about a quarter of my face to melanoma. (Too many summers of lying on the beach and chanting "Burn body, burn. Bleach hair, bleach.") I had three surgeries to remove the melanoma and then two facial reconstruction surgeries. The good news is that my surgeon got it all. My father passed away in November, three months after his 95th birthday. Update 2014: Three years ago Don and I moved to our paradise: Bend, Oregon. We actually live about 20 miles south of Bend, nestled in the pines. Our neighbors are white-tailed deer, LOTS of grey squirrels and umpteen varieties of birds. (Who knew I would turn into a bird geek??) This year is Don's and my 30th anniversary! It seems like yesterday that we looked at each other in amazement as we passed our 5th anniversary and broke all of our previous records, lol!!! I hope all is well with you, my friends. :)
