Harold's Story
Life
Life has been a journey of unexpected and surprising dimensions. It has had many wonderful twists and turns, none of which were a part of the "master plan" while I was at the Brook. I did not like high school and almost dropped out. There were many reasons for that but none for discussion in this venue.
I went Temple after a year of night school and working while I was trying to figure out who I was and where I wanted to go. Then after an additional 3 years of summer, night and full-time day classes I managed to graduate during the summer of '64. Believe it or not, I did my student teaching at Overbrook and sat in the faculty lounge with some of the "professionals" who almost drove me out of school. I was determined not to emulate their sense of professionalism! I decided on education as my vocation and have NEVER regretted the decision. I got my first job in Philadelphia at Edison High School.I then pursued my Masters of Education at Temple and then completed my Doctorate in Educational Administration at the University of Pennsylvania. I had a wonderfully fulfilling 36 year career as a teacher and administrator (principal, superintendent) and have worked as an educational consultant for charter schools for the last 7 years after...Expand for more
I officially retired from public education in 2000. It is a great life!
I am married to Joy, a girl from NY, that I met at Temple. We have been married for almost 50 years. We have 4 children (3 sons and a daughter) They are all married and have blessed us with 9 grandchildren to date. They all reside within minutes of our permanent home in Holland (Bucks County) so there are many planned and spontaneous events with the entire clan. We spend most summers together at our "beach house" (as the grandchildren call it) in Ventnor much as our 4 children did since 1977. In 2006 I purchased a home in Ft Myers with my son as he spends most of the year there conducting the Gulf Coast Symphony, a community orchestra he founded 20 years ago.So my year is spent mostly by the water. Joy does not like Florida so I pretty much am a winter bachelor. She is starting to adjust though. In between we travel at least 2 times a year overseas and am simply determined to make each day count for something sweet and wonderful.
I never would have predicted this life. It has far exceeded any dream or expectation I may have had as a struggling teenager at Overbrook High School. Its been a long journey. I hope my fellow classmates have had equally fulfilled lives.
