T.'s Story

Shameless literary plug follows. Forgetfulness is probably just a case of good engineering. I guess the real magic of the world is fueled by what we don't, can't know. Being massively retarded, I looked behind every shrub for magic. I'm afraid I still do, but I've started planting the odd easter egg just to see what happens. Of course, some memories are just as remembered. The InBetween was objectively a place of great fascination and abberrant behaviors, and the Unicorn/Mithras _did_ exist. Even the Second Infantry Division wasn't a complete waste of time, and in its defense, it _was_ rather silly. Silly always has potential.... --- Excerpted from "Cloud Song" by Linda Vista at Lulu.com. Elizabeth Harrisburg The other girl left, and Kath locked the door to the Engineer’s Room behind her. She threw some switches on the console, and a large tape began to revolve. Then she entered the studio, and let Jane in. She locked the studio door, too. The station doors were thick with soundproofing, and had ancient dead-bolts on them. Kath seated Jane in the camera’s field and shot the bolts again. They were isolated. The “ON AIR” light glowed, and the studio resonated with music. “It’s been you, woman, right down the line….” As Kathryn’s theme played she checked the camera output. Then she picked up a sheaf of pages and read her show’s announcements--and ads—over the song. “Next up, from Hoover High in San Diego, Kat’s Korner. Stay tuned. Kat’s Korner is brought to you by….” Jane sat watching her. The sweep hand crawled as preliminaries flowed by. Jane felt her stomach tighten. It was a sure bet that most of Hoover’s student body was watching. Jane took a deep breath and let her eyelids down a trifle. Breathe. Breathe. Smile. Suddenly it was OK. She opened her eyes, seeing Kath. Beautiful. Yes. ‘Like the night.’ Her smile relaxed as her shoulders lowered. Her hands rested in her lap. Thank you, for a life walked in beauty. Thank you for the beauty I see. Thank you for the beauty I can share. Thank you for friendship. Thank you for problems I can solve. Thank you for my gender. Thanks for friends. Thank you. Light surrounds me…wait! That might start my head up. Think of shadow…clouds. A cloudy sky with cool gentle wind, and lots of moisture. No migraine, no bright lights. Dark clouds heavy with rain. Our picture is going up there in the clouds, we sing among the clouds. Dance with me, Tlaloquilies…. Kath pressed a key. The music faded into “Wildfire.” On the back wall, a montage of pictures glowed, ove...Expand for more
rlapped, cross-faded, flashed, Pictures of Jane at Fall, of her in the bleachers, waving and talking into her phone, Of Cardinal Cheer in their costumes, acrobatics, dancing, the laser battle, Jane holding Heather steady as she climbed on the back of the wrestling captain. Jane in her white uniform teaching the karate class. Jane sewing in the drama room, talking with Larry, Larry intent, Jane looking demure and amused, Jane and Heather kissing while Olivia blushed, Jane waltzing with Wolker, Jane standing beside an old man in a wheelchair, the football team surrounding them, arms raised in the air. Jane standing inside Hoover’s main entrance, looking out at the afternoon, her expression unreadable. And finally, Jane in the Senior Courtyard, the stone girl visible over her shoulder. A great black crow was perched on her arm, pecking at something she was offering. Jane looked like the crow had just told a joke. If they called her a mother crow, Jane would be honored. Just tell the truth, breathe slow, and remember your friends. Whatever Kath does, she’s on her path. Help her walk it. Jane nodded. The music played as the pictures changed, forming a beautiful tribute to the blonde girl, then it lowered just as the sweep hand crossed the “24”, and Kath spoke, “This is Kathryn Dzamefe, bringing you Kat’s Korner for Wednesday from Hoover High School in San Diego on one-oh-one point three FM and TV Channel 1930.” The song faded into the background. Jane turned around from where she’d been watching the montage. “Did you make that?” Kath nodded. Jane shook her head. “Thanks.” Kath’s lower lip trembled, and she stayed tense. She gave a little nod, turning to the camera. “Today Jane Jones is my guest. I asked her here because she’s…newsworthy. People are talking about her.” She swallowed. “A-after how viciously I treated her, and…and I’m so sorry, Jane! Let me say that right now. I’ve been so rotten, and so stupid….” Across town, Ness shushed everyone and turned up the volume. Kath shook her head, turning back to the lens. “I never believed she’d agree to come on the show, but when I asked, she accepted right away, and showed me such kindness and…and compassion…so some of the rumors seem true. I have so many questions I want to ask, but now…I guess I should ask you what to ask first, Jane. Do you mind?” Jane laughed. “God, Kath, I don’t know about TV. But…maybe we could let the momma elephant out of the room?" Kath smiled. “She is taking up all the space, huh? OK, thank you. You have had experiences that most people never do.” -- Cloud Song is the 4th volume in "My Friend Chloe" by Theoni Harrisburg, writing as "Linda Vista," available from lulu.com, amazon.com, or Itunes, as paperback or eBook, and miscellaneous "Lending Libraries" from Russia which operate in violation of the Berne Convention.
