Harry's Story

After GHS out to Purdue to study engineering on a Navy scholarship. Commissioned in 1975 with the hope of flying, but the Navy needed engineers so based in San Diego on a guided missle cruiser, USS Jouett CG-29, mostly in engineering jobs (boilers officer, Main Propulsion Assistant), short time as Anti-Submarine Warfare/Nuclear Weapons Officer. A great time with lots of steaming around in the Pacific chasing Russians (or them chasing us!) and going to Hawaii, Guam, Midway,Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Philipines, Hong Kong, Thailand. After 3 1/2 years transferred to East Coast and guided missle destroyer, USS John King DDG-3, deployed to Mediterranean where we chased more Russians (or they continued to chase us!) and steamed to Monaco, Malaga Spain, Naples, Athens, Alexandria Egypt (Alexandria was interesting - we were the first ship into Egypt the day after they signed the Arab/Israeli Peace Accord - an incredible experience. 100,000 cheering people on the piers, riding horse-drawn carriages to a State dinner in Dress white uniforms with medals and swords - not your typical day in the fleet!). After the Navy moved back to San Diego to live on my sailboat (why buy a condo?). Had been working on a design for a new type of nuclear power plant facility with a friend from college, which we completed the patent work on. In 1981 sold the boat and moved back to Greenwich (too tempting to live the ...Expand for more
life of ease out there). Went to work for Manufacturers Hanover in NYC for 4 years, moved to Citibank in 1985. Met my wife Nancy on the train commuting into NYC from Greenwich, we got married in 1985. Moved to Wilton in 1986. We have three great children, daughters Emma and Jessica, son Harrison. Started a global investment business in Citi in 1987 specializing in owning big capital assets (powerplants, ships, railcars and locomotives, etc) all over the world. Worked out well, ended up at $2.4BN and happy to report, very profitable. Left Citi in 2004 as I felt the culture was changing for the worse after the merger with Salomon/Travelers, sold all my stock (a good thing!). Started a private equity firm with some Citi colleagues and a friend from another PE firm in 2007. Its been a tough environment but the business is off to a great start and we are thankful every day for the success we've had. Lots of attractive investment opportunities out there. Still flying, boating and occassionally fly fishing for fun. Oldest daughter Emma in her sophomore year at USC in their Film School majoring in film production (nice work if you can get it!). Jessica is in her sophomore year in High School and Harrison is in 7th grade. I hope all of you have had a great time and found fullfillment in your families, friends and what you do. We still have lots of road ahead. Enjoy the ride! Best to all.
