Harryette's Story

Hello 2 all my fellow classmates; I came from Sikeston in 1968 to Cape Girardeau, Mo 2 have a surgery; ended up staying here and attending church with my aunt; while there a charming young man with the famous hollywood haircut caught my eye. Little did I know he would call later that Sunday evening in August and we would end up life partners in marriage. He had 2 go in the military in 1969; while in training in Ft. Leonardwood, Mo his parents & young brother & I would go every weekend to visit with him until he was privileged to come home for visits; from there he went to Ft. Benjamin Harrison, IN where he trained to be a postal dispatcher in Viet Nam. He was then sent over & in active duty in VietNam, active in the sense that a postal dispatcher delivered mail out in the field, not as a dispatcher at home sitting behind a desk. While there was grazed across the top of his head with a bullet; he carries the scar today as a reminder to never take life for granted; when he came home, was critically ill with a "bug" the dotors attending him could never quite come up with a name for it; however in March 1971 we were married. In May we found out I was pregnant and ended up sick most of the 9 months. My very precious and loving daddy went to be with Jesus in December before he had the privilege of meeting our little bundle of joy Larry Scott "Scottie" to us born February 18 1972. He was and is our only child; now 37. We lived in Cape until 1998 then moved to Fruit-land; stayed there until 2006 then moved back to Cape to be near our granddaughter Alexis Joy, now 12. I've had several jobs including selling Amway, Avon, babysitting, bookkeeping positions, travel reservation clerk for B.A.R.T., telephone secretary, nurse aide, assistant manager of a party/gift/balloon store, greeting card distributor; we had a craft booth at the Country Shade Craft mall for 6 years; learned a lot about crafting and have made some lovely things. It's so nice 2 know you have a talent you weren't aware of and it be success-ful enough to sell the product. While there I also made lots of homemade goodies & believe me at holiday time I worked around the clock for 2 days & nights many times to have enough to serve all who desired them plus having enough to go over and do sample days. Made homemade jams as well and at one time had either 14 or 15 flavors. They were selling as quick as I could make them as well. The trouble with all of it, you have to sell it, in this area, at a very modest price or folks won't buy, so you never get anything for the long hours of labor. I started doing freelance writing for the Southeast Missourian monthly pub-lication TBY, The Best Years in 2001 and submitted articles until fall of 2006 when they changed their format. Larry's family owned a custom meat market when I met him; it was success-ful until 1988 July when the slumping economy then forced them-us, to close their-our doors. I had worked there many long hours as well; I'm sure I can tell you as much as most butchers or meat cutters about cuts of meat, what are the best flavored, what the exact cuts are, what part of the animal it comes from, etc. I've been a good mother, wife, Ma-Ma, church participant and friend to many I've come in contact with through the years. My outgoing personality as I'm sure many from school will remember as one of my attri...Expand for more
butes has gotten me a lot of places I'd never gone had I not have been as friendly as I was. A few folks have decided they no longer needed my friendship, I count it their loss. Perhaps someday, they will realize that. For the past 2-1/2 to 3 years, I've been very ill and was not real sure life for me was going to be much longer; in reality, none of us know that from day to day; however the pain I've suffered, I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy regardless of who they were. There were days I felt like I was in an actual HELL from the burning throughout my internal being, especially my throat and stomach. Many days I slept for 12-14 hours just to be able to go help Larry for a few hours at one of our cleaning accounts. When I would get home, I'd be so exhausted I'd wash up a bit and have to go right back to bed; ate baby food for several months just to have food in my body. Had many tests run for several possible problems; Lymes or Lupus disease; and a chemical reaction since having been raised in Southeast MO where the cotton and soy bean pesticides were used to discover I had Chronic MONO and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I also have Fibromyalgia which is very taxing to the body; you hurt all over, in places you didn't even know you could hurt. I still tire easily and my throat muscles are very weak; I couldn't speak above a whisper for about 6 months but little by little, my vocal chords have strengthened; I'll never be able to sing again which is something I loved doing. I had sung in church for 35 years. Except by a divine miracle, that will never happen again; or unless we learn surgery will correct the problem. I am supposed to have my 8-12 cranial nerves tested and an ultrasound done on them as soon as we can save up the money. No longer have medical insurance. Through all the bad, there has been much good and life does go on. We have taken yearly trips to Branson over LaborDay weekend since 1999 starting with our kids 5th wedding anniversary with exception of 1 year when our daughter-in-law JOY, couldn't get off work due to a conflict of her superior being on maternity leave. We won't get to go this year due to us having lost some of our accounts from the slumping economy this past winter, but will take a casual trip to St. Louis to the zoo & a couple days just to spend with the kids. My spare time when there is any available, one of the things I love to do is read, as well as having my love for writing as I'm certain by now you can tell; we've owned 3 homes in Cape, one we watched daily being built which was our first home; my daddy got to see it one week before he passed away in 1971; he was so happy for us; little did he know the next week we'd be looking down on his cold, still form rather than discussing Christmas eve plans. That just about completely broke my heart, but I finally resolved myself that life had to go on. He would have loved our son as Scottie would have him. Daddy was a great outdoorsman & Scott has been as well. So much was missed by both of them but I've tried to tell him a lot about his "PaPa" he was never privileged to know. That is all a parent can do when there is no alternative...........I must close for now; if you would ever want to read some of my articles from the paper, please let me know and I'll e-mail you a copy. Lovingly yours, Harryette Miller Burnette
