Hayyim's Story
Sholem aleichem!
Maybe someday I'll actually tell (bits of) my story here, but for now I'll take the easy route and answer some of the Story Wizard questions.
1)
How do you hope old friends remember you?
Fondly and vividly. I've always liked to make an impression. Also, I always felt uncertain about my own sense of myself, so if you knew me when, I'd love to hear how *you* perceived me. I can take it. Problem is, I can't dish it out very well, because my memory is like swiss cheese from a mad cow. <sigh>
2)
I always wanted to be:
[ABBIE HOFFMAN or PETE SEEGER or MOHANDAS K. ("Mahatma") GANDHI or ALBERT EINSTEIN]
when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a __________ idea.
ABBIE: ridiculous (except for my brother)
PETE: admirable; achievable if I worked hard
MO: fantastic, in both senses of the word
AL: the sober choice
As it turns out, they were:
Largely right, but unable to influence the choices I made.
4)
What's the wildest thing you ever did in school?
Left Santa Fe H.S. one early September morning to hitchhike to NYC with two young women classmates I barely knew.
Another: At Santa Fe Mid-High School, I asked my awesome young home room English teacher to go to a school dance with me and she said yes! But then I chickened out because I'd never been to a dance or on a date of any kind and I had no clue what to do. Worst part, I never said anything to her about it, didn't go, just acted like it never happened. Barbara Churchhill, where are you? (Does anyone know?) I'm soooooo sorry!
7)
Where have you lived? Why did you move?
A bunch of neighborhoods on the north side of Chicago; a bunch of north-shore suburbs of Chicago; Forest Hills, Queens; Stamford, CT; Santa Fe & Pojoaque, NM; on the road (U.S. and overseas); Waltham & Somerville, MA; Israel and occ...Expand for more
upied Palestine.
Reasons for moving: father's career advancement, father's political blacklisting; parents' divorce; parents' failed reconciliation attempt; stepmother's health needs; fights with each parent in turn; hippie adventures; mooching; jobs; schooling; spiritual/religious pursuits; my wife.
One effect of all the moving: I've attended 24 schools (public K-12, post-secondary, and Jewish religious schools).
10)
Life doesn't always turn out the way you expect. What's been your biggest surprise?
No children. I always "knew" I'd have children. Other things, too, but that's the biggest.
13)
Which teacher(s) would you love to see again? Why?
I'll omit the two with whom I've actually stayed in occasional contact.
Mrs. Haley, Ravinia Elementary;
Frank Moscowitz, Boone Elementary; Barbara Churchill, Santa Fe Mid High;
Kaye Parmelly, Santa Fe High
(don't know her married name); and
William Congdon, Franconia College -
to thank them all.
Rabbi Natan Greenberg, Bat Ayin Yeshiva: To hug and pray and learn and dance with him.
15)
Ever live in a dorm? Join the Greek system? Talk about campus life.
Franconia College dorms: rustic cabins in the woods - sweet!
17)
My current age is: 56. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be: PATHETIC. I was so completely: PATHETIC.
19)
What happened to your first crush?
No idea. Ellen Winters of Ravinia, where are you?
21)
Still dress like you did 10 (or 20) years ago? Talk style.
From around 1966 to 1999 I wore hippie clothes - either raggedy or colorful and exotic. Then just as I was becoming more religious a friend gave me a traditional-looking (for Jewish men) black fedora, and within a few months it had changed my whole wardrobe! Now, except for my long hair, I look like a chassid to most people - but not to a chassid.
