Hayden's Story

Hayden is from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Hayden's schools include Bishop McGuinness High School. Hayden later attended Sarah Lawrence College. Music Hayden likes includes Mariachi Orgullo de América, Son del Barrio. More about Hayden:"For nearly 20 years, I have been involved in education, the arts, and cultural studies. I grew up in Tulsa and Oklahoma City, but left Oklahoma to attend Sarah Lawrence College in New York. For most of my early life and into college, I studied art, primarily painting, which only the State Department of Education thinks is important as they certified me in this over all other academic work I have accomplished. Sarah Lawrence was a game changer for me as my love for history guided me away from art toward an emphasis in cultural history, anthropology, and other humanities. Upon graduating, I lived in Washington, DC for three years. This would be the Nader Years. In the midst of working a crazy low-wage job in a high profile office, I decided I wanted to be a folklorist. So, I moved to Kentucky where I got my MA in Folk Studies and Oral History from Western Kentucky University. My Masters degree proved to be valuable training for working in public history, historic interpret...Expand for more
ation, and arts administration. Through my varied career, I have worked for several historic sites and cultural agencies, including Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky Museum, and Historic Carnton Plantation. One of my most cherished experiences was when the Tennessee Arts Commission approached me to head their Arts in Education grant program. After living in and around Nashville (south central Kentucky-Middle Tennessee for several years), I moved back to Oklahoma with my wife Sarah and son Jackson to be closer to our families. Back in Oklahoma, I began teaching. For over seven years, I have been faculty for the College of Arts and Science at the University of Phoenix in Oklahoma City and Online. I have also taught classes at OSU-OKC and Oklahoma City Community College. For three years I ran the Oklahoma Center for Arts Education at the University of Central Oklahoma developing outreach programs and research and policy initiatives that support arts education. Recently, I took a position as head of community relations for Western Heights Public Schools. I am also the Director of the Oklahoma Folklife Council, and for five years, I have been working on by PhD in Geography at the University of Oklahoma.".
