Heather's Story

Life My husband, John, and I just moved from Missouri to Houston a couple months ago. We finally left the comforting world of academia for the brutality of real life. Actually, we love finally having real jobs instead of being professional students. John is a consulting chemical engineer at Berwanger and I am a research assistant at Baylor College of Medicine. The project I am working on involves the molecular and genetic pathogenesis of Parkinson's Disease and our lab just received a grant from the Michael J. Fox Foundation. I finally found a great use for those degrees in Biology! John and I have been married for eleven years, but no children yet. We do have a cat named Piebald. Does that count? Spring 2004: We've survived 3 years in Houston! This place is actually starting to grow on us. I am now working at UT-Houston Medical School researching corneal dystrophies. I've been toying with the idea of going back to school to get a Ph.D., but for now I like what I am doing. John is still at Berwanger, loving every minute of it. We still don't have any kids, but we did have a new addition to the family 2 years ago. His name is Stache (because his fur above his lip looks like half of a milk mustache!) and he is the sweetest cat ever. Summer 2007: Two years ago I was forced to quit my job at UTHSC because of a serious ...Expand for more
medical condition which I had to have 3 major surgeries for. Yeah, it sucked. But I am all better now (praise G-d) and I have gone back to teaching (I have a double Master's in Biology and Science Education.) I teach fifth grade through 12th grade science at a private Orthodox Jewish Day School and I have really found my niche. Of course I miss doing research, but I dearly love my kids and the whole Jewish community I have become involved with. This past April, John and a co-worker decided to venture out on their own as consulting chemical engineers and they started their own company, Smith & Burgess, LLC. He is living his dream and I am so proud of him! STILL no children yet, but our two cats are doing great, thank you. 2008: Obviously teaching is not my niche since I have totally ditched that gig and have decided that I need to focus my energies at home. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED teaching, but I was getting very discouraged by the bureaucratic BS of it all. So I am now officially retired. I think John has a pool going to see how long it will take for me to go insane from boredom. His wager I believe is 6 months. Well I've gotta go scrub a toilet now... 2010: This year I got the best job of my life. In May I gave birth to a beautiful little girl. I am now happily a full-time Mommy! o/~It's Friday, I'm in love o/~
