Heather's Story

Life It was a long time coming, but my husband and I finally married in July of 2004. We dated for nearly three years before officially tying the knot! Prior to that we had been good friends for a long time. Although we were both older getting married (I was 32, he was 34), it felt good to have some things accomplished prior to that point. 2004 was a busy year for me personally...I bought my first house in January, earned my Master's degree in June, and got married in July. No babies yet, though we're looking forward to starting a family soon. Just call us late bloomers... School High school was a mix of awesome and awful times for me. Those of you who knew me knew that all too well! I had lots of crushes in high school, who shall remain nameless...mostly musicians though. I think Mrs. Ghiorso was the greatest influence on me personally while I was in high school; she also stayed in touch long after I graduated. Who could forget Mr. Gorsuch and his...ahem...interesting methods? I remember making lots of videos with Pam, Donna, and Jenny for all the presentations we didn't want to get up and do personally! I'll never forget digging a grave in Gorsuch's backyard to film a scene from "Hamlet," and borrowing a skull from the science department to hold up while announcing, "Alas, poor Yorick..." Or getting "run over" as Myrtle from "The Great Gatsby." Those were the days! College For my first year in Washington state, I attended a community college to avoid the exhorbitant out-of-state tuition fees at the university level. I applied and was re-admitted to the University of...Expand for more
Washington as a sophomore, residency in hand, with a much more reasonable tuition. I thought I would eventually become a doctor, and began working toward that end. It didn't take too many years (thankfully) to figure out that I didn't have the stomach for medicine, and switch to education instead (something I vowed never to do). I graduated from the University of Washington in 1993 with a degree in natural science. I went on to earn my teaching certification there in 1994. After moving to Ellensburg four years later, I began work on my Master of Education degree while working full time, and finally completed it in June of 2004. Workplace I moved to Washington not too long after graduation, and began working as a recreation leader at a youth center in Everett. After that I worked at the local YMCA as a day care and day camp leader for some time. After transferring into UW, I worked as an usher in all three campus theaters, as well as a part-time nanny for a yuppie couple with upscale jobs in downtown Seattle. My first summer out of college, I interned in the science labs at Weyerhaeuser, assiting with tree tissue culture experiments in the R&D department. That fall I began my first teaching job in Shoreline, Washington, where I taught middle school science, alternative ed, and service learning for four years. After that, I moved to Ellensburg to continue my teaching career, where I currently teach middle school Language Arts and Biology. This is my 13th year of teaching, and I can't see doing anything different! Unless I find a way to become independently wealthy, that is!
