Heidi's Story
Life
Grad. from SUNY Plattsburgh in Nursing.Commissioned into US Navy Nurse Corps and was stationed at Portsmouth,VA, Groton, CT (where I met my husband, Glenn who was a submarine officer) and Keflavik, Iceland. Left the Navy in '91 and married Glenn that year. Enjoyed traveling where the Navy sent us including West Lafayette, IN, San Diego, CA, back to Groton, CT, 3 yrs in Bremerton, WA. Glenn left the Navy in '96 and his civilian job (GE Power Systems) brought us back to NY. I have retired('07) from the Navy as a CDR. After a variety of nursing jobs, I had found my love to be Labor and Delivery. I have 5 children now- Elisabeth '97, Karoline '99, Timothy '01 and Stephen '04, Sylvia '07. In Oct.'02, we moved to Shanghai, China. In March '03, I was recalled to active duty for the Iraq War where I was mobilized to National Navy Medical Center, Bethesda, MD. Had to leave children and husband in China. Served 72 days. Went back to China until July '04.Moved to Neenah, WI until Aug '08, moved back to Shanghai China for 2 1/2 years. Have relocated to the Houston, TX suburbs in April 2012. I continue to remain at home raising my five blessings.
School
Poestenkill Elementary, Algonquin Middle School and Averill Park High School. Graduated 1980. Graduated SUNY Plattburgh, NY in 1984 with degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Workplace
After graduating from SUNY Plattsburgh in Nursing, I worked on...Expand for more
a med-surg floor at St. Mary's Hospital, Troy, NY until April 1981. Commissioned into the US Navy and first assignment was Naval Hospital Portsmouth, VA. Worked on a Multi-service Officer ward, then Multi-service ICU until Sept. 1988. Transfered to NH Groton, CT and worked the newborn nursery, ICU/REC RM until Nov 1989. Did and overseas tour in Keflavik, ICELand. After leaving the Navy in '91, I worked at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, West Lafayette, IN in ICU until Apr.'92. Then moved to Groton again and I worked as a manager at Mystic Healthcare Facility (a resp. rehab floor). Moved to Wash. STate in Feb.'93. Worked at Harborview Medical Center, Seattle for several months, then hired as a Civil Service nurse for the NH Bremerton, WA where I found my love of Labor and Delivery. Moved back East Feb '96, worked at St. Peter's, Albany, NY until Oct. 2002 on L&D. Now I work at home raising my five children. The best job? Being a mom!!!

Left the Navy after Iceland, but joined the Reserves in Oct. '92. Was in a Fleet Hospital Unit (#9)when living in Washinton State. Feb'93- Jan'96. Was in a Program 32 unit while living in the Albany area as well as when living in Shanghai, China. Drilled at the N&MC Reserve Center Albany, NY Feb '96- Mar '04. Retired August 2007 at the rank of 04 (CDR).
