Heidi's Story
Wild Ride
Divorced single mother to five boys. The oldest are grown and the youngest two have special needs. What I've learned in real life is that nothing is easy or perfect. I've settled down in Lancaster, PA, bought my own home, depend on a hefty divorce settlement with military benefits that allows me to take care of my kids, and spend time with a wonderful man who accepts the complexities of my life.
My life in a nutshell: I got my degrees in journalism and broadcasting at Northwestern, met and married a Domer, became Catholic, did a few years in TV news & production; traveled to Germany, PA, and VA with my JAG attorney husband in the Army. During my La Leche League years, I birthed babies at home, breastfed, and homeschooled. I raised the kids in a big traditional house with a huge back yard. I did lots of volunteer work with youth & high school sports and the homeowner's association while my husband built his military career, often out of town.
The worst decision I made in my whole life: marrying a person I didn't know all that well when I was young. While he put on a great facade of being a good Catholic, it turned out he was a cheater and liar on many levels. It...Expand for more
was a shock to discover that after 24 years of marriage, and as much as I tried to salvage the relationship, I can't tolerate lies. The toughest journey I have ever made has been navigating divorce with a narcissist.
On the bright side, dealing with the loss of emotional and financial security has made me a stronger person. I ran a marathon at age 48, at a time when running was the only thing that gave me relief from the pain of loss. And I found a sincere partner who I can laugh with and trust; a nice combination.
I still enjoy the many things I have taught myself to do with my (many) Apple computers. I got my first Mac in 1984, and I have had dozens of Macs (new and used) over the years. I worked for a television show called The Computer Chronicles at WITF in Harrisburg, PA, and since I was the only person on staff with a Mac, I got to use all the demo software. I am reasonably good at database design, and can put together a GoogleSite with relative ease.
I am thankful of the amazing opportunity I had to participate in Beyond Our Control at WNDU-TV in South Bend, IN, during my high school years. Facebook allows many of us to stay in touch and share our jokes yet today.
