Helen's Story

Life No pets. No kids. Just one great husband. We'll be married 10 years next year. Been through alot but worth it in the end. Father died in 1991, one of my brothers was killed in a fatal car accident in 2005. Mom didn't approve of my marriage. My brother's funeral was the first time I saw my family or relatives in 10 years. People say I should write a book. I just want to be happy and live my life without people judging me all the time. I became seriously ill in January 2003 and lost the use of my right leg. I was in a wheelchair, but people still slammed doors on me. They didn't believe that I was disabled because I "just didn't look it". I was determined to improve. Today, I don't need a wheelchair to go to most places. I started driving in the summer of 2003 but with adaptive equipment in my car. The pain is constant but not nearly as bad as in the beginning. I will need treatment for the rest of my life but I am still optimistic that I can continue to make progress and even recover fully if I remain focused. School I don't remember much of myself from high school except for being a social butterfly. I was also a lot better with names, as I can recall always saying "hi" to someone by name. How do you remember me? (be gentle) College I graduated from the University of Michigan-Dearborn in December 1990 with a BA in Political Science and a Minor in Sociology. I had some trouble juggling a full time job, school, and home responsibilities. I was just happy to graduate at the end of it all. I am still close with my circle of friends from college today. We've all been to eachother's weddings and baby showers, housewarmings, etc. It's just really nice to see how...Expand for more
our lives have changed and know that we are all still close. I just completed a Masters Degree Program at Central Michigan University in August 2005. My concentration was General Administration. It was the closest thing to a degree in Business that I could manage between a full time job and ongoing treatment. It's not where I thought I'd be going to school; but, considering all things, I am still proud of myself for getting a graduate degree. Workplace After graduating with my BA, I started working with various disabled populations. At first, it just started out as odd jobs to make extra money; but, before I could blink, I had over 15 years of experience in both the private and public sectors. I now work for Wayne County at the Mental Health Agency. I was recruited by the County to assist with a state mandated transition for centralizing the complaint process for individuals accessing mental health services through the Wayne County Public Health System. It sounds more important than it pays. I've been looking for a job since I got my first job. I hope that someday, I will find a job that pays me for what I do and involves work that I am truly passionate about doing. But, for now, I'll just take a higher paying job. I used to make alot more money when I was well. It was an adjustment to become ill and make significantly less than before. It's difficult to get used to being limited when you once were more accomplished. I am working my way back there. I was promoted to a department head in September 2005. I've had the creative freedom to structure a really solid Intake and Referral Unit. Sometimes, it's nice to see your work in motion, especially when it works well.
