Helen Brown:

CLASS OF 1965
Marianna, FL

Helen's Story

Life Hello, Marianna High friends. It's a long way from 1965 to 2003; and it's a long way from Marianna FL to Castle Rock, Colorado, but here I am in this beautiful, little town in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. I moved here about 15 years ago; I love Colorado but I've never gotten over my longing for "all good things back home." Before I came here, I was a single mom raising a beautiful daughter, Jennifer, now 28 years old. She has given me two beautiful granddaughters. (I feel like I'm in a time warp -- remembering high school and talking about being a grandmother at the same time -- weird). I worked for the State of Florida for nearly 20 years; the legislature for about 13 of those years, first as a secretary and eventually becoming a legislative analyst. When I came to Colorado, my daughter was just 14 and we had quite an adjustment to make; everything from higher altitudes to snow. I've also done professional writing and have had my own business as an editor/proofreader. I've become an accomplished cook; can do gormet, but good old homestyle is still my favorite. I married a wonderful man, a retired game warden, 10 years ago, and we have a wonderful life. It took many years and a lot of miles to find him. He's a wonderful husband, father and grandpa. He's a published author (he wrote two books on fishing in Colorado -- now out of print). My granddaughters are 7 and 3; their names are Sadie and Juliet. They are sweet and beautiful, smart and talented. I'm a housewife now and love it. I'm close to my daughter and her children. We ...Expand for more
have great times together, and although I hate getting older, I LOVE being a grandmother. I have many fond memories of good old Marianna High School (and some not so fond, too). I still think about the end-of-the-year picnics at Blue Springs, and I especially remember going to Dorothy's for lunch; hanging out with my friends and playing the jukebox. I can't remember the name anymore, but, oh, I do remember the wonderful hamburgers at a local drivein. (Can anyone refresh my memory?) I have so many happy memories of Saturday matinees at the Ritz Theatre. Is it still there? I am wondering what happened to Linda Williams and Davine Walters; also Wade Pierce and his family. Shirly Cook, too, if anyone knows her whereabouts. She and I had many adventures growing up as neighbors; my daughter, and now my grandchildren, love to hear me tell them about the many adventures Shirley and I had as kids. I also miss Alice Mitchell (last name Duke, now) I haven't seen Marianna in many years -- I wonder if you can still swim in the creeks and fish at the Millpond. How has the town changed? I think I was 15 or so before I had my first McDonald's hamburger (in Panama City); I'm sure there must be one there now, although it's hard to imagine. I am looking forward to hearing from any of my old buddies and classmates from Marianna and learning what you have been doing. As I was looking over the list of registered classmates, I saw so many names I recognized. What a thrill! Catch me up on the latest news from Marianna. Can't wait to hear from you. Helen Lewis Brown
