Helene's Story
After OHS, I went to Sullivan Co. Community College then transferred to SUNY Fredonia 45 miles south of Buffalo. Cold country.
I decided I did not want to be an English teacher after all . Got a job in NYC as a bookkeeper, didn't know anything but they were willing to teach me and I learned. After that I got a job at an advertising agency for book publishers. That's when my life changed. I learned a lot about advertising although I was still in the bookkeeping dept. I met the love of my life. He left the agency , we dated and then he moved to VA Beach. I followed a few months later and we were married in 1978. I got a job for a silk screening co. there.
We moved from there to to of all places Hackensack, NJ. I started working for a Real Estate Management Co. and became the Supervisor over 8 Bookkeepers, not bad for an English major.
In 1989 circumstances had us move to Santa Barbara, CA where I still am today. My husband Richard and I did a little traveling and we fully enjoyed our life together. We adopted a Calico ...Expand for more
cat or shall I say she adopted us coming in the back door of our townhouse the day we moved in and never left.
My husband of 27 1/2 years passed away almost 11 years ago. I keep busy working for a CPA/ Realtor 30 hrs a week and am a partner in an e-book co. as sec/treas and a second co that is designed to issue quality works from enduring interests focusing on literary franchises.
I now live in a 55+ Mobile Home Park. Best move I ever made. Here in the park, I have become the host of what we call Last Friday Social. Everyone brings an appetizer to share and what they want to drink. We talk for a couple of hours and get to know our neighbors. I get together once a month with friends (12-15) to make music and enjoy a potluck. I enjoy going out to dinner with friends various groups of friends as often as possible. I also enjoy cooking, I do holiday meals for 7-10 people. I've become a good baker as well. Needlework and making hook rugs are among hobbies and as an old English major I still find time to read once in a while.
