More about Derek:"I am a native of Indianapolis, Indiana and yes I am a huge Indianapolis Colts fan! I live now in Corpus Christi, TX with my wife, Esmeralda and my daughters India, 17 years old and 2 &1/2 year-old, Chantal. Esmer is a 5th grade teacher at a local elementary... and India is a junior in High School...Chantis was recognizing and reading words at 22 months! She's alot smarter than her daddy! I graduated from North Central High School in Indianapolis (Hello fellow panthers!) and went on to Western Kentucky University on a baseball scholarship. I transferred to Tennessee State University in the fall of 1987. In 1989, as a Junior, I was drafted to play professional baseball by the New York Mets.I played 3 years with the Mets organization and was traded to the Toronto Blue Jay organization in 1992. I played 4 years with them. I made it as high as AAA, but never made it to the Major Leagues. I did get the pleasure of playing against one the most famous athletes of our time. He was actually famous for his basketball talent, more so than his baseball. Do you know who that is???? Michael Jordan...yes. In 1994, MJ played for the Birmingh...Expand for more
am Barons (AA Chicage White Sox) and I played for the Knoxville Smokies (AA Toronto Blue Jays). Of course he retired from baseball after that year, and returned to basketball. As you see from my picture album, I got to meet up with him again after a Indiana Pacer-Chicago Bulls game in 1997. In the fall of 1995, a film for HBO was being produced called, "Soul of the Game". It was filmed in Huntingtonburg, Indiana. It depicted the Negro Leagues back in the early 1900's and the lives of Jackie Robinson, Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson. A casting call was made in Indianapolis for extras and real players, so because I was home for the off-season, I was used as a double for Josh Gibson's character and a player for the Grays. I had no speaking parts. The movie starred Delroy Lindo, Salli Richardson, Gina Ravera, Mykalti Williamson and Blair Underwood. If you have not seen this film, go get it at your local BlockBuster. It's a classic! In 1996, I continued my career in the Texas Louisiana Professional Baseball League. I played in Tyler,Texas up until 1997. I then had a 5 year stint in Amarillo, Texas, where I won my one and only championship and batting title. I played there from 1998-2002. I played in Edinburg, Texas in 2003,and in Shreveport, Louisiana in 2004. That was the year I retired from professional baseball. I played a total of 16 years. When I was drafted to play baseball in 1989, I needed a total of 47 credit hours to complete my degree. When my wife and I moved to Corpus Christi in 2004, that's what I did. I finished my degree via the RODP. I studied for school during the day and in the evening, I worked as a baseball instructor. That's what moved us down to Corpus Christi ..... the opening of a baseball academy. In May of 2006, I became a graduate of Tennessee State University! My major was in Interdisciplinary Studies. In the winter of 2007, I landed a dream sales job with a pharmaceutical company called AstraZeneca. It's the home of the little "Purple Pill" called Nexium. In the fall of 2010, I joined Boston Scientific's Neuromodulation division. I finally made it to Medical Device Sales!!!!!".
