Henry "Hank"'s Story
I retired in 1998 as Chief of Communications, Newark Fire Department.. I was a Deputy Chief in the Newark Fire Reserve, and a Lieutenant in the Irvington Rescue Squad, I have lived in New Zealand for the past 20 years. I've been married and divorced three times. Strike three, you're out.
To me, high school was a major popularity contest, and I was only popular with the school bullies.. By today's standards, I would've been considered a nerd or geek. While I thoroughly enjoyed learning, I didn't enjoy being beaten up, robbed, and having my life threatened. I was the bully's delight. It got to the point that I was deathly afraid to go to school and I started to cut.

e having to leave school to be home for them. So, because of extenuating circumstances that were beyond my control, I'm not recognized as being part of the Class of 1969 (the school admin would not allow us to be known as the Class of '69). I'm not invited to, or welcome at, any reunions,
In later years I was able to earn my high school equivalency and fulfill my childhood dream of joining the Newark Fire Department, which, I'm sure, would make my former guidance counsellor spin in her grave! Her reply to me about wanting to be a fireman was, "Every little boy wants to be a firemen. What do you want to be when you grow up?" My Jersey sarcasm came through and I replied, "Oh, I wanna be a high school guidance counsellor, just like you!"
I did okay for myself. I am living very comfortably on my pension after retiring 22 years ago at the age of 47!! Suck on THAT, Mrs. Goldberg!!
