Henry's Story

After a twenty-two year Army career (German-Russian linguist, Company First Sergeant, wonderful memories), I now teach high school history, political science, and special education English, and am a sometime writer of poetry. My wife, Amber and I live in a small NW Ohio town. Our daughter Heather and her guy Jamie have blessed us with Felix Orion Losey, a bright and bouncy boy who was born in October of 2010. I loved my high school years, and was inspired in my life by both teachers (Principal Williams, Stacey Bunton, Mr. Harris, SGM Marr, and others), as well as by classmates who, though long removed in time and distance, are still very much in my recollection of a wonderful high school. I hope my friends remember me as someone who, while not perfect and prone to inserting his foot into his mouth, has made a difference in a lot of people's lives. I always wanted to be a writer when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a dreamer's idea. As it turns out, they were right, but so what?. My favorite way to relax is to listen to some soft jazz, Baroque or Celtic music, read a good book, and drink a couple of cool beers (I love a good Cabernet, too). I was inspired to become a soldier by an old soldier who taught me more than I deserved to be taught, and I was inspired to become a teacher by my high school teachers, who mean more to me with every passing year that I spend in the classroom, and whose traits I try to make my own. The one person from my ...Expand for more
past who I'd most like to see again is Sylvia Abundis, because I still feel guilty about ruining her gown. I would love to see Stacey Bunton again, because she was a great inspiration to me: I became a writer and a teacher because of the example she set. But then, so did many of my teachers. I remember that in my high school year book, I was voted "Most likely to become a four-star general... in the boy Scouts!". Well, I became a senior non-commissioned officer and German/Russian linguist, spent a little time in the corporate world as a quality systems specialist, and ended up right where I think I belong - as a teacher of social studies nad English Language Arts intervention. Sorry, Boy Scouts... In 2011 I was inducted into the Sons of the Republic of Texas, San Jacinto Descendants, and Sons of Confederate Veterans. I had never paid much attention to the past, until one of my students who is interested in genealogy asked me about my ancestors. I was embarrassed to know next to nothing. A year of research helped me pull the roots out of the ground of history, so to speak: A fourth great grandfather, James Tippett, came to Texas in 1832 in an ox cart. A third great grandfather, James Rowe, served as a lieutenant under Sherman at the Battle of San Jacinto. Two great grandfathers and many uncles and cousins served their state in the tragic War Between the States. In short, I have always been proud to be a Texan, and am now glad to know why. God Bless Texas.
