Herb's Story
Life
Joined US Air Force after college. Fulfilled life long dream to become a pilot. Flew KC -135's for 6 years, then joined the Il Air Nat'l Guard and stayed 16 yrs. Retired after going to Desert Storm. 40 yrs old was too old to find myself sleeping on an army cot in the desert. Hired by United Airlines in 1978. Checked out as Captain in 1991. Now a B-747 Captain, flying mostly to Hong Kong and Asia. Married the 1st time in 1972. Divorced in 1982. Had three children. Oldest son, Matthew, died in 2003. Hardest thing I have ever experienced. . Moved to Ormond Beach in 2005. Love golf and play all the time! 10-12 handicap. Started announcing the Chicago Air & Water Show in 1988, and have done it ever since. Do a yearly TV show, "Chicago's Top Guns." I do about 5 air shows every summer. Even ran into a few old "Seymourians" a few years ago in Chicago. Also, I have served as the media spokesman for the United Pilots and the Air Line Pilots Assn. since 1994. Resigned from that position Jan 1, 2008. Retired from United Airlines on Sept 24th, 2014. 36 years, the last 11 as a B-747 Captain. I am older but not much wiser. ;+) Just a small town boy, tryin' make it in the big city!
