Herb's Story

After high school, I floated around and did the odd job, looked into school, and figured out (by listening to friends that I should join the Navy). So in December of 1988 off I went. I completed basic in Chicago, and went to my first submarine the GATO. I completed my tour on the GATO stationed in Connecticut and went to the PHEONIX stationed in Virginia. I spent the bulk of my time at sea on both boats, up and down the east coast, Italy, France, Spain, Morocco, England and others locations. These were my crazy, hazy party years (great stories and some great times, ah the old single life). In 1992 I was assigned shore duty in England to work for NATO. It was during my leave period that I married Stacey Garton (she was in the class of 88 from Decatur; we have known each other since the 5th grade). We moved to London and had a great time, it was a little tough being away from everyone we knew but we did just fine. We traveled often during this time, Italy, Austria, Ireland (Honeymoon time) Germany, Greece, France, etc. In 1995 we had our daughter Jackie, boy she was a handful and still is today, she is girl with my personality so it is very complex. I am scared when she hits her teen years. In 1996 we were sent to Hawaii, were I was stationed on the WILLIAM H. BATES. My son Logan was born on the island in 1997. Both the kids loved the island, when we visited Seattle Logan freaked because the water in the sound was not blue, he had only see island water, and the dark color of the sound scared him. I deployed once on the BATES, we went to Japan, Guam (YAP Scuba Trip), and Australia. In 1998, I was assigned to Data Ops in Pearl Harbor, and in early 1999 I left the Navy. We had decided that it was not going t...Expand for more
o be good for our family with the separation time and I really wanted to be home with Stacey and children. During the time in Pearl I certified in several technologies and when we got out I took a job as the IT Director for a small distributor. While at this company Stacey convinced me to go back and finish school so I did and am glad she helped me focus to complete it. I stayed with the company for a year then took a job with a local telecommunications company and have been with them since. I am currently managing a team in mobile technology R&D, and have been in several other IT areas in my time with the company. Both Jackie and Logan are now in junior high at Lakota (funny we moved away, then moved back to family). Jackie, loves school and is the academic, she also enjoys track and gymnastics and will be trying out for softball this year. Logan attends school and does well with some direct attention, his true passion is sports, he loves baseball, football, golf, fishing, and track (really any sport he can find). Stacey balances her time with being a mother, wife, den leader, campfire leader, Sunday school teacher and my keeper (or point of reason) during the week. How she is able to do all this I will never known, but I love her for this and am grateful she is with me or I would be lost. I spend my free time getting lost (kidding); I help both kids with their sports and school. I like wood working, personal programming, general tinkering, outdoor activities, camping, hiking, beach combing etc. I look forward to many more happy and adventure filled years with my wife and children. Since you have managed to sit through my ramble and read it all, I wish you well and many happy years. Thanks for your time.
