Herbert "Skip"'s Story
When I left High School I went to SAC and worked at San Antonio Express & News. During the summer months I worked as a Lifeguard at childrenâs camp called Camp Loan Star in La Grange, TX. There is where I met my wife, Judy and we were married at the end of the summer of 1968. We moved to Houston, TX and I went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. We had three beautiful daughters born in 1970, 74, 78. I could not figure out why every four years, believe me â¦. That was not planned! I was transferred to Dallas and worked at the training center in Irving, TX. in 1988
I retired with SWBTC in 1990 and went to work for a company called Fujitsu as a Manufacturing Manager in Richardson, TX. . I graduated college and got my Bachelorâs Degree. I moved over to their training department because it required a lot of traveling. My children were all out of college and my wife had just retired. It was 1997, and we sold everything, put a few items in storage, drove our car to a used car lot, and sold our car. In 2004 while visiting my Mother in San Antonio, we realize her dementia was getting worse. Judy informed me we were moving to San Antonio and we were going to take care of her. I retired again, and we took care of my Mother until her death in 2008.
After the estate was settled my wife and I got into our car and headed for Las Vegas to meet our new Son in Law. Our middle Daughter had gotten married during the time we were in San Antonio, but we could not go to the wedding due to our commitment with my Mother. Judy and I had wanted to go and see Lake Tahoe in Reno. After we visited with our Daughter and Son in Law, we headed to Reno, NV and were planning where we wanted to go next. When we got to Reno, my wife found a lump, and our plans changed. We headed back to Las Vegas. Our Daughter worked for Pfizer Pharmaceutical and knew all the doctors we needed. However, it did not help. After a short battle, Judy passed away November 2009.
I moved to a little town called Hideaway, TX and still travel as much as I can. My kids say I was born under a wondering star. I try and see my Grandkids when my kids let me. I have two Granddaughters and one Grandsonâ¦. They are perfect!
