Herman's Story

Graduated from SHS in June of 1957. That summer I attended a course at the U of I and became a engineering tech for the State of Illinois Highway department. For the next year I did surveying work while interstate 74 was being built between Champaign and Danville. I bought my first (and still favorite) car which was a 1961 Ford convertible, all black inside and outside with of course fender skirts. Five years later I wrecked it while driving from Danville to Chicago. I was impatient to pass a slow truck in a fog. I won't do that again. I am a much more patient person as a result of this experience. Attended Christian Brothers University in Memphis from 1958 to 1962. Played basketball, studied, went to a lot of night club concerts when locals were playing including Elvis, Jerry Lewis, Johnny Cash, Fats Domino, Charlie Rich, etc. Memphis was a hotbed of music during those years. Graduated with a degree in Accounting. Attended University of Arkansas 1962 through 1965, working on my MBA and PHD. U of A is in a small town in Arkansas (Fayetteville) and there was not much social life there - movies, bowling, small bars, etc. Taught at Loyola University, Chicago for three years ending in June 1968. I really enjoyed the life of a teacher, especially the many holidays and summers off. But I was restless and moved to California following a humongous snowstorm in the winter of 1968. I also enjoyed Chicago. Loyola (downtown campus) is right near the Near North which was a great singles area. The Red Garter (banjos, beer, peanuts, and singing old songs) was only a few blocks away ...Expand for more
and one of my students was the doorman there. You could go anywhere in Chicago on the El for $.50. It was a real bargain although noisy. In the summer of 1968 moved to California where I still live. I started in Northern California but gravitated to San Diego area when I discovered that is where all of the nice beaches and warmer water were located. However, the water is always cold in California compared to the the warm waters of Florida. But we have no mosquito problems and decent humidity. I worked for Price Waterhouse CPA firm for several years in San Francisco. San Francisco was fun and I enjoyed the hippie days although I could never get into the lifestyle. San Francisco "happy hours" were the best. You could dine free on gourmet snacks for the price of a drink or two. Following San Francisco, I moved to San Diego where I married my beautiful wife, Margie. We have 5 great sons, a wonderful grand-daughter with a grandson coming. Work consisted of 20 years at Copley Newspapers (San Diego Union), 3 years at Trizec-Hahn (owned most all of the shopping malls in San Diego and many office buildings throughout the US and Canada). I have been working at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) for the past 10 years and am contemplating retirement in early 2009. My retirement fantasy is to drive across the country with my wife and visit high school and college friends, and to buy a house in Danville and live there part of the year. I really miss basements. I grew up in a house with a large basement, but they are as scarce as St. Christopher medals here in California.
