Amy's Story
Life
I'm living in Lake Balboa (that's Van Nuys with a fancy
new name) with my two dogs and my roommate and
her cat. I'm working at Pierce College (short
commute!) and starting grad school soon (I
have enough undergraduate units now for 2 Bachelor's
Degrees.) I spend a lot of time with my friends. Recently
divorced after 7 years, I'm enjoying my freedom and
living it up.
I lived in Southeast Louisiana for three years and I was
very saddened by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
I saw many of my friends and patients (I was a
veterinary nurse from '93 until this year) stranded and
abandoned. That's my current charity cause, rebuilding
the city that I loved so much [Habitat for Humanity] ...
School
High school = insecurity, lack of sleep, walking long distances, hating high school, feeling like a total misfit (that feeling went away at Berkeley ... and came back when I moved out to the country in Louisiana)
College
Moving to Berkeley changed my life. I was finally in my elemen...Expand for more
t and came out of my shell for the first time in my life. It was incredible and I wouldn't trade a minute of it ... even the rubber bullets whizzing by my head (thanks Blue Meanies!). I didn't even come home after the first year. I can't imagine how I would have gotten through my dad's suicide if I was anywhere else with any other group of people than my "family" at Cloyne Court.
Workplace
I'd been a veterinary nurse for most of my adult life. It was very rewarding (except financially) and tied in directly with my studies. I have enough case studies and anecdotes to teach bio for the next 30 years! While I do love my new career in education, I miss the adrenaline rush of emergent cases and the fast pace of a busy practice. I learned so much in the veterinary field and met so many incredible people, it was totally worth all the cat bites, maggots, ticks and animal feces - besides I can gross anyone out with my animal hospital stories, anytime, anywhere. Just ask me about "Stumpy" Stumpf.
