Elizabeth's Story

Life I got married to Justin Kallestad in April of 2003. . We have a 4yr old, male, yellow lab named Bailey and we own a house in New Prague, MN. (It¿s about an hour south of Robbinsdale). Justin works for Champion Air as Manager - Dispatch. He loves flying, hanging out with his buddies, spending time with our daughter, and playing sports. I enjoy photography, scrapbooking, traveling, having bonfires, and spending time with my family and friends. On October 4, 2005 I went through a major life changing event. I was hit by a van in a head on collision. It was so bad that it took the fire and police departments 45 min. just to cut the roof of my car off to get me out. The collision gave me a traumatic brain injury, and left me in a coma as well. It also tore my left arm up and left me with major nerve damage in the eyes. I failed 4 out of 5 tests to declare me brain dead. The doctors were going to take me off life support and told my family that if I did come out of the coma, I would never eat, talk, walk, go to the bathroom, or shower on my own again. My family new something was different than what the doctors where saying and trusted what the Lord had told them. So my husband and parents told them "No, just wait a few more days". All in all about 2 1/2 weeks after the accident, I came out of the coma. Now I'm doing great since I've completed all the therapies. I had to learn EVERTHIN...Expand for more
G over again! How to walk (because I was in a wheelchair), ABC's, counting, brushing my teeth, everything! Because of the accident I have short term memory loss. That¿s slowly getting better. (Surprisingly my long-term memory is fairly good). I had double vision for almost 2 years, until I was able to get a surgery that would help a-line them. I still have more surgeries before that¿s completely done. With that eye nerve being damaged, I have to tape my eye closed when I sleep. (Until, surgery comes). I have an odd looking arm with heavy weight restrictions since my arm was degloved down to the bone and skin was taken from my leg to cover my shoulder / arm. My left ring fingure broke and healed in a weird way as well. My husband has been updating a website since the accident. To view go to the caringbridge website and look up elizabethkallestad. On a great note we finally had a baby girl on 2/2/2007. And she truly is a blessing. . . We were trying for two years to have a baby before the accident happened. When we told the doctors we were still going to try. They told us it wasn't possible to get pregnant and if we were able too; I would have a miscarriage. To this day, whenever I stop in to say ¿Hi¿. All the doctors and medical staff get emotional when they see me; because "It's a miracle your (I'm) here!" They played a part in saving my life. And, I now have a miracle of my own!
