Holli's Story
Life
I am in my dream job teaching art.I have lived in Houston for 24 years. I have been married for 23 years with two sons, three grandchildren, and two cats. I started dealing antiques several years ago and opened up a small shop. I am very involved with my church and spend most of my summers on mission trips. My youngest son is a junior studying economics at the University of Texas, Hook-Em-Horns. Did I mention I am very happy and at peace, life has been good to me but it just threw me a curve ball. In September of '06 I was diagnosed with Leukemia. In August of '08 I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Mantle Cell Lymphoma. My world had been rocked. I under went 8 months of a very intensive and toxic chemo at MD Anderson in Houston. 24 hour drips for 6 days. Awful. I have had 6 bone marrow biopsys OUCH!, over 100 shots, 8 CT scans, 10 blood transfusions, 6 platelet transfusions, 1 blood clot, 140 blood draws, 30 days of crippling bone pain and many side effects to horrible to mention. During that time I was isolated, I could not leave my home except to go to the hospital and I could not have anyone inside my home except my wonderful husband and son. I spent six weeks in the hospital. I could not eat fresh fruit or vegetables, work in my garden, be near plants or flowers, and worst of...Expand for more
all I could not see my grandkids. I had to quit working.(I hope to return soon) I knew this was to huge for me so I gave it to God. I am now in remission PRAISE GOD but my cancer will return. We are praying for a long remission! Soon after I found out this devastating news Hurricane IKE tore my town of Baytown up,the eye passed directly over us. We were in a lock down at MD Anderson and watched the entire event on TV safe and sound. Due to flooding several years ago flood gates were installed and once they came down no one could enter or leave the hospital. Everything was rationed even coffee YIKES. My home was left unharmed but our rental house lost the roof and major damage caused our tenant a lot of greif. My church was left with 4 walls only but this Easter our sanctuary will be ready! My school district had so much damage it was two months before teachers and students could return but that came at a price. Work continues and from what I understand it continues to disrupt many of the classes. My art room was one of the few classrooms that IKE did not destroy, again God working for me. I have so many friends that lost their homes. So much has been destroyed taking many good memories. There are many areas still in turmoil so please pray for those towns and people in this area. Prayers Heal, Holli
