Hollis's Story
Life
After Newtown I went to Columbia, City College (CCNY) and then spent a year at The School of Visual Arts. I used to work in design studios and advertising agencies in the USA then one day I just picked up and left in 1968. I traveled for about 2 years working in India and Europe in the film industry. When I was in India in 1970 I met an Australian lass who provided me with a few letters of introduction to Australian production houses. With those in my pocket, I'd thought I try my luck there. Some of my European friends had told me how great Australia was. They were right! The 2nd year I was here, I was asked to start a film studies Dept. at an art college in Perth, Western Australia and that's where I made my life's career.
I spent 19 years as Lecturer/Head of Dept. in Film/TV/Design/Marketing and only left to start up a multimedia production unit for the Ministry of Training in 1990. I am now working at the IT Directorate of the Department of Education helping Schools and Colleges integrate new technologies into their curricula and to build virtual learning communities across a state territory of more than one million square kilometers.
In 1973 I married a wonderful woman whom I met in Perth two years before. We just celebrated our 39th wedding anniversary. We have 4 children (2 of each). Every year or two seems to offer new challenges. I still look forward to the adventure.
In 2004 one of my oldest and best of friends rediscovered me via Google (God Bless the Internet). This lead to a coast to coast reunion with the people who were most important to me when I was growing up and whom I thought were forever lost. I had always felt so cut off from my roots living in Australia but in the 'analogue' universe once you lost touch, it was impossible to reconnect, especially from half way around the world. The reunion was just great. We are in touch regularly and are planning another reunion in Europe in '05. My life feels so much more complete.
Well that planned '05 reunion turned into an '06 reunion and another in 07 and 09. On these trips I was able to introduce my wife to all the friends I grew up with. They loved her as much as I do. Hectic though it was (we drove '0000's of miles in the...Expand for more
USA and France) it was great to see my old buddies again to deepen our relationships. I'm sure glad that we Australians get such long holidays!
Recent update-We still travel a lot. 2010 was Ireland and the start of the 'years of the leg'. Sustaining a climbing injury in my knee while on one of the Aran Isles, my knee exploded a day after my birthday after we returned home. A week after the op that fixed that, the tibia in the same leg stress fractured. Months on crutches and in moon boot. Then when all that righted itself, I slipped on some gravel in the garden and broke my ankle. Well they say bad luck comes in threes so I should be looking at good luck for years to come now! This year it's back to the USA to see my old friends and to meet up with some recently rediscovered old friends. I am really looking forward to this.
The 2012 USA Tour was wonderful. Couldn't catch up with everyone that I wished to but did spend a magic week in Vermont with my newly rediscovered friends. It was great to see what productive lives they have lead in the service of the community. They were also so generous, warm and welcoming after all these years. That week was the highlight of our trip and I look forward to seeing them again as soon as we can manage it.
We were back in the States again in autumn 2014, Had a great time catching up with friends and family. Ranged from Washington to Nashville, northern Vermont, Boston, New Haven and a final week in New York City. Met up with our youngest daughter for the last two weeks so I had a chance to show her the city I grew up in. Posted some photos here of a wonderful lunchtime reunion at Katz's Deli with a number of Jackson Heights friends. Have a look to see if you recognise anyone.
School
My main memory of life at Newtown was working on the school newspaper. We had such a great time in that office by the auditorium. Also the school band. I was such a terrible trumpet player! No wonder, I never practiced! I used to bring my guitar into the practice rooms and try out new riffs before going down to the Village on the weekend. This 'talent' did do me well with one of the English teachers as some friends and I performed a few Scots/Irish folk songs for her class.
