Holly's Story

Update 2/22 It's been a while... Excited about our upcoming 50th reunion (just delayed a couple years due to Covid). Looking forward to reconnecting with friends from long ago. Just sending out the invites brought back many memories. We moved into another fixer-upper in Sonoma about three years ago. We spent 30 years on the last one, but don't have that luxury of time now. We're in a good place at this point, with the bulk of the work being done, and what's left to do is livable, so we'll keep chipping away at, as time and money allow. Now helping with my aging mother who lives in Santa Rosa, and is basically doing fairly well, but can't drive anymore with her macular degeneration. The whole family is going to Mexico next month to celebrate her 90th birthday - Covid be damned! No grandkids yet, but Dawn (33) majored in art at UCSB and is now an interior designer. and Lance (35) majored in art at SLO, became a USMC officer and is now working for Plant Construction in SF. (Steve Malerbi just retired from there! Small world!) Life has been good and looking forward to enjoying the golden years. Lots of exploring and wineries to check out, now that the rules of Covid are finally relaxing. Hope to see you soon! Update 12/08 All and all... a good year. Health has been pretty good - a little 'bout with melanoma, but early stage and hopefully it won't come back- I guess those days of laying in the sun with the baby oil or water skiing all summer, finally caught up with me - otherwise, we're working hard at beating the odds and staying healthy. Diet and exercise is not a lot of fun, but it sure feels better in the end. Lost about 30 pounds and try to get to the gym regularly or least take a long walk with the dog daily. Had a great visit with some of the SMHS girls last summer, while Scott was out of town at a Chico frat reunion. Maura, India, Pattie McD, Sue D, and Gennine all came over and we spent the weekend just eating, drinking, laughing and hanging out at the house. It was wonderful to catch up and just spend time being together and reminiscing about the good old days. Heading to Australia for 3 weeks the end of January, to find Dawn a place to live while she studies in Sydney for the next year. Things look to be tight money-wise for the next year, but hopefully we'll get a chance to go back to visit during the summer and maybe get over to New Zealand, too. My son is just about ready to graduate from college and is at that scary place where he needs to decide what he's going to do now that he's grown-up and will be on his own soon. It's not an easy time to be venturing out, but he's pretty optimistic (wonder where he got that from?) and hopefully things will pan out successfully f...Expand for more
or him. I think the film industry is going on the back burner though, as his internship over the summer gave him a whole new perspective and the insight that there are a lot of people in that industry that aren't very nice! I suppose that occurs in every field, but LA seems to have more than their fair share of people that are overly impressed with themselves and not real easy to work with. So that's the year in a nutshell - and looking forward to a reunion in the not too distant future! 40 years - It seems like yesterday! Updated 8/07 - Well we're just about to close the book on this cancer stuff. My hair has finally grown back although it came in quite curly and very grey. Had 3 more surgeries after the radiation - one to remove another tumor in my neck(benign) and a couple more relating to reconstruction. I have one left to go in November and then I can really move on. The good news and the bad news is, I lost my job at Mercy H.S., due to the illness, but that allows me to be around the house and available to help Scott whose home-based business is really picking-up this year. Lance just turned 21 and is still hoping to become a film director when he finishes college. His back-up plan is to join the army and become a helicopter pilot. Dawn has spent the summer working in an orphanage about an hour outside of Nairobi, Kenya. She's teaching English, Math, Science & Art to 3-6th graders, much to her surprise as she had expected to be more or less, babysitting. Had a fun visit with Gennine Loveland a couple months ago, as she lives near UCSB. She's a chemo nurse now, joining a group of people that I found to be angels on earth, while going thru treatments. Otherwise, all and all "life is good". Updated 7/06 Attended Santa Rosa J.C., then was in the travel business for 25 years. Married (22 yrs now!) and moved to Belmont, CA. Son, Lance is studying art/wants to go into films - now attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Daughter, Dawn will be attending UC Santa Barbara in fall of 2006. She's also majoring in Studio Art, but is not too sure what she's hoping to do in the end. She has been fortunate enough to have sold a number of paintings but I don't think she wants to make that a careeer. Have a great husband, Scott who is building an airplane in our garage (we haven't been able to park a car in it for about 15 years) and is also constantly working and maintaining the the yard. Also, have 2 cats and my best friend is my little American Eskimo dog, Joey! I was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2006 - Am now bald and flat, but hopefully, not forever. If the rest of the treatments go as planned I will be back at my job in Admissions at Mercy High School, Burlingame by Nov. 2006.
