Brad's Story

We had a FANTASTIC 57th Mini-Reunion!!! Thank you all so much!!! Candy and Sue, you both made it VERY SPECIAL!!! I Apologize, my camera was not working, and my cellphone camera apparently decided to take the week off. Sorry!!! Two Week Countdown until the South High School Class of 1965's un-traditional FIFTY SEVENTH High School REUNION in Surprise, Arizona, Covid-19 eliminated the chance to hold our 55th High School Reunion in Las Vegas in 2020. THIS JUST IN!!! Our 55th, er, 56th High School Reunion is now set for Oct 6th, 2021 in Reno, NOPE, NOT 2021 EITHER!!! The "NOT VERY TRADITIONAL FIFTY SEVENTH HIGH SCHOOL REUNION:\" IS NOW SCHEDULED FOR OCT 26TH IN SURPRISE, AND BUCKEYE, ARIZONA. (Some of the May 2019 South High Mini-Reunion pictures from Santa Rosa are posted below.) Back to when and where we grew up. In some cases a 1 or 2 minute walk down to the beach (Tom Sharp, and others) or a 10 or 15 minute drive for others. Snow Skiing was a 1 1/2 or 2 hour drive!!!. It couldn't get much better!!! After delivering newspapers for a couple of years, I got a job at the McDonalds on Torrance Blvd.. I then got a job at Sears Torrance for Christmas Time Help in the Catalog Dept. If you happened to know me waaaay back when, you knew that I always wanted to become a police officer. I majored in Police Science at El Camino Jr. College. ( I graduated in a lightning-fast 3 years:-) I worked in several departments while at Sears. After graduating from El Camino I was able to move to the Security Department of Sears. At about that same time, I transferred to Cal-State University, Dominguez Hills. I chose Sociology as my major there, and a short time later added Math as a minor. In early '70 I joined the California National Guard 140th Engineer Company in Manhattan Beach. For my Basic Military Training I was sent to The Garden Spot of the Mid-West, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri for Basic Training.. I stayed at Leonard Wood for another 2 months to complete my MOS, (Military Occupational Specialty 62M20, learning to drive a Rugged Terrain Fork-Lift, and a Scoop Loader (and more as it turned out.) One morning my AIT raining Sergeant told me to go to the Motor Pool and get a Scoop Loader to assist another training company in redirecting some water down a hill to a field below.. At the Motor Pool, I explained to the Sergeant that I needed a scoop loader at a certain area of the base. He said, "Yeah, there it is." Pointing to a loader on a flat-bed trailer attached to a Big Rig Truck. I asked if there was a driver for the truck available. He smiled and said, "You are the driver," and he followed up with, "It's Military, no key needed." So, I taught myself to drive an olive drab "Eighteen-wheeler" with a 13-speed transmission, towing a flatbed with a scoop loader securred on it. I drove to the location where the work was required, and finished the job with a little over 30 minutes to spare. My Guard Unit was the one that tore down the old Nike Missile Site on Sepulveda near Palos Verdes Blvd, and helped build Wilderness Park at that location. I was still working for Sears in the Security Department, when a friend of mine in my National Guard unit asked me if I would be interested in a part-time job at Playboy Mansion West as Mansion Security. (He was a Police Officer so he worked there as an Escort Officer for Mr. Hefner.) I answered in a very cool and professional manner, that, "Why, yes Mike, I might be interested in that." The next week I drove up to the Playboy Offices on Sunset Blvd. I got the job and started the next weekend. The word, "SPECTACULAR" does not come close to describing Playboy Mansion West!!! I got to see, and in many cases meet all kinds of movie stars and athletes. The vast majority of them were very nice people. A short time later I tested for the Hermosa Beach Police Department, took a pre-employment physical, and 2 weeks later, seven of us new recruits (Cadets) started our Police Training at the LA County Sheriff's Academy. After my probationary period on Hermosa PD, they allowed me to go back to work part-time at Playboy. Since I was now a Police Officer, I became an Escort Officer (basically a bodyguard) for Mr. Hefner. One or more of us went with him whenever he left the property. About 3 years later I lateralled to the Redondo Beach Police Department. They let me continue working at Playboy.. After about 2 years on Redondo working in the Patrol Division, a good friend of mine and I applied for the Pier Patrol, and they picked Alex Perez and I for the one year assignment. Pier Patrol was great fun! We could work uniform or plain clothes, our choice. We could also pick the kind of car we drove on any particular night. The Pier Patrol Bronco 4x4, a regular police unit, or a plain, unmarked car. One night Alex was driving and made a traffic stop on an immaculate yellow Cadillac with four occupants. Alex went up to the drivers-side window (to do all of that Professional Cop Stuff) while I went to the passengerside door. I started talking to the front seat passenger. He was a super cool guy and he asked me where a certain location was in the Triangle Area on Harbor Drive because they "had a gig" there. It turned out that they were THE COASTERS singing group (Charlie Brown, Yaketi-Yak, ...Expand for more
Poison Ivy, Along Came Jones, Searchin,' etc.) As Alex took the drivers info back to the unit, I asked him not to issue a citation for unregistered vehicle. Alex said "okay." We went back to the car and I continued my conversation with all of the passengers. My new Best Friend, the shotgun passenger was the bass singer of the group, and we were having a blast talking about anything and everything. I gave him the directions to their venue and he invited us to drop by and watch them when we were not busy that night. A couple of hours later Alex and I walked into where they were playing. My New Best Friend, the bass singer, stopped the song that they were singing and said, "Hey everybody, there are two of Redondo's Finest back there, they are our friends! Give them a big round of applause! The kids really let go and started clapping and cheering and made us feel very welcome. We stayed for 5 or 6 more songs, and as we were leaving, Alex said, "Man, you were sure correct in not writing a ticket, you can't buy that kind of positive advertising for any amount of money... And their songs are great!!!" In the late 1970's I was was asked by RBPD Lt. Tom Doty to teach his Po[ice Science class at El Camino Jr. College when he took some time off. I had a blast teaching a class where just 10 years before I had been taking the class. Being a bodyguard for Hugh Hefner was very interesting and A LOT 0F FUN to say the least.. I got to see and meet a lot of celebrities and sports stars. Like I said before, the vast majority of them were very cool. Ringo Starr and Don Adams were two of the coolest. I met Ringo one afternoon at a Charity Fundraiser, and every time he saw me, HE would point and say to anyone within earshot, "Hey everybody, there's my buddy, he's Mr. FBI." After a couple of times, even Mr. Hefner thought that it was hilarious. We saw Ringo several more times that evening. A short time after the one-year Pier Patrol assignment ended for Alex andI, the Redondo Beach PD was going to add a total of 4 Police Dogs and Handlers to the force. I applied for the job as one of the Handlers. I came out number 3 of the 4 applicants. About 3 months later I went up to Bakersfield for the two-week Canine Training Course. The dog that was chosen for me was named"Bishop.." He was a great looking German Shepard, and Extremely Intelligent. The dog program was fantastic!!! They were our partners, at work, and our pets when they were at home. Shortly after "hitting the street" as an Official Canine Unit I received a call that the Hermosa Beach Police Department was requesting a Canine Unit, for Mutual Aid to help search for a Sexual Assault Suspect. We arrived at the scene and went to work. The suspect had entered and exited thru a side window of the house. I had Bishop sniff around the window and told him to "find the bad guy." He immediately started pulling me South Bound. He kept pulling south for 3 blocks, then his nose went up in the air and he turned East on one of the Avenue Streets in Hermosa. I had a real good idea he had this guy as he started pulling harder on the leash. After about 2 blocks he really got excited and stated growling and barking. Well, the suspect heard this and saw this as well. He had hidden under sun deck that was almost out to the sidewalk about half a block east of our location. I had two Hermosa Officers backing me up, and we all saw the suspect wearing the exact clothing that the victim described. The suspect started running east bound about 200 feet ahead of us. Bishop took off like a rocket. He closed the distance between VERY QUICKLY. Bishop leaped for the guy and. I thought that he had jumped too early, but I was wrong. He got the guy with one canine tooth right in the small of the guys back knocked him "az-over-teakettle." It was great, one of Bishop's favorite things was to play fetch. He got his teeth around the guys left shoulder and proceeded to hunch backwards in reverse in an attempt to drag the guy back to me. Do not feel sorry for this creep. As he turned out to be the "North-End Hermosa Rapist." He was wanted in over 30 rapes and sexual assaults, in North Hermosa alone. He was the Head Internal Auditor of a Major National Bank.. It turned out that that everywhere he did his internal audits around the state, there were unsolved rapes Investigation showed that some of the cities had only partial fingerprints, and things like that to go on. (This was way before DNA Evidence..) They nailed this guy Hard!!! He was sentenced to 25 years in prison. (Yes I know, it wasn't long enough, but this was in California where many Murderers get sentenced to 7 years. I did receive a letter here in Arizona notifying me that he was being released.) I HAVE PROBABLY BORED YOU TO TEARS BY NOW. IF SO, I AM SORRY. I have had a lot of fun already, and life continues to be a blast!!! I hopethat you had a very Merry Christmas and a Hopefully will have a Happier 2022!!! I'm writing this on the 28th of December,,2021. Our next Reunion is (hopefully) going to be held in Arizona. The Reunion Name is, "THE CLASS OF '65 TURNS 75!" I think it was Sue Rodriguez who came up with the GREAT NAME.. I Love it! It will be our FIFTY SEVENTH YEAR REUNION, HOW MANY SCHOOLS HAVE EVER HAD ONE OF THOSE???????? Enjoy Life!
