Erica's Story

Life Born in Holyoke, Mass into a career military family, we spent my childhood on the road. We'd moved to Missouri and then to Japan before I started school. After a few years in Peru, Indiana, we moved to PA for my third grade year to be close to relatives while dad spent a year in Thailand. Spent 4 years in Germany, then 1 year in California, completing my last three years of High School in Rome NY. Dad retired one month before my grduation and we moved back to PA. Two months later (August) I uprooted again to move to NJ for the start of college. I was home for vacations and summers and met "the boy next door" during the summer between my Freshmana nd Sophomore years, getting engaged that Christmas, and married two months after receiving my Bachelors degrees. After a few part time jobs and a try at insurance sales, I took a temp job with the local telephone company in November, 1986. December 27, they hired me full time and I'm still there 17.5 years later. Jim & I are involved in our church where we've taught Sunday School, both served on Property Board, both served as active deacons, and I've just finished my first term as an Elder. We both sing in the Chancel Choir and I'm choir libraian. Jim also directs the four handbell choirs and the church as well as a Community bell choir, and as of this spring, a home school bell choir of 3rd to 9th graders. I'm a 7 year practitioner of Taiji and added Taekwondo to my martial arts regimen in 2005. Due to health problems only completed my Recommended Black belt in 2008. Still hoping to get back and complete the black belt. I began taking art classes in oil painting in 2000. I completed an acrylic painted wall mural (approx 9' x 20') in the church in 2004, and a second two- wall mural in 2005, and two smaller murals in 2008. I've also begun pencil sketching, have take a few classes. I hope to try Chinese calligraphy in the near future. No kids ourselves, but we work with kids regularly through the choirs and have assisted with projects for the Youth Groups. We are cat lovers, with 6 cats currently, though we had as many as 9 at one time. We're avid SF readers, especially Anne McCaffrey. School Being an Air Force brat, we moved frequently. In a few cases, I attended more than one school during a school year. 1st grade: begun at Camp Zama, Okinawa, Japan in 1967. Completed 1st and attended 2nd grade at Grissom AFB, Peru, Indiana 1967 - 1969. 3rd grade: Bloomsburg, PA 1969 -1970 4th grade: Sept - Dec 1970, Bloomsburg, PA; December, 1970, Ramstein AFB, Wiesbaden, Germany; Jan - June 1971, Kaiserslautern Elementary, Kaiserslautern, Germany. 5th: Kaiserslautern Middle School, 1971 -1972 6th & 7th: Hainerberg Elem 7 Jr High, Hainerberg Housing Area, Weisbaden, Germany. 1972-1974 8th: Beale AFB, Linda, CA 1974-1975 10-12: Rome Free Academy, Rome NY, (near Griffiss AFB), 1975-1979. I've lost touch with all of my school mates over the years, especially with so much moving around. Never had many friends at school, was always the quiet book worm. No exceptional skills in music or sports to draw me into a specific crowd. As far as boyfriends, my first date was in G...Expand for more
ermany in 7th grade. A steady in California, and several boyfriends in Rome. I've forgotten most of the names, but still have fond memories or most relationships. A "near miss" with an older boy when I was in 7th grade, who wanted more than I was willing or able to give at that time, but didn't press the case, left me scared of relationships, but also made me very aware of the possible consequenses and dangers of a sexual relationship. Good years all in all. Saw a great deal, learned more, still learning and traveling when time and money allow. College I entered college directly from High School. I had a love of horses and hoped to work with horses, which brought me to a college with an Equine program. The fact that it was only 2.5 hours from my parent's new home was a bonus. Far enough away, but not too far. The fact that is was one of the two colleges I applied to and the only one that accepted me made it ideal. The program was geared for horse lovers like me who had little practical experience, but would be capable of running a barn and riding any horse in the barn by the end of hte four year program. Being an A-B high school student who needed little study to maintain the grade, I had to learn to study at college. Grades at the end of the first marking period were an eye opener in the C range. My first roommate, assigned by the college decided to commute, leaving me to find a replacement. Three different rooms and three roommates in my first year. I was a financial aid student, getting college loans and scholarships and being in the work-study program, which assigned me to the dining hall. My boss in the dining hall soon had me doing paperwork as well as working on the line and in the kitchen. He sensed a mathematical skill and suggested I look seriously at a minor in business or accounting to supplement the Equine degree. I planned a dual major, found a long-term roommate who lasted the remaining three years. I spent portion of my sophomre and junor years on crutches due to knee problems, then knee surgery, that kept me out of my riding class for a year and a half. I served as Sophomre class president, was a member of the Intercollegiate riding team for two years, and was accepted into the honor society. I had hoped to be involved behind the scenes with the theatre department, doing set work, but classes and work schedules didn't allow for it. Selecting a small, all girls college helped me find a place to grow in knowledge and self-confidence. I found a small circle of friends, including a professor who was a form of surrogate father and mentor, who accepted me as I was and helped me grow. I'm still involved on and off campus as a member of the President's Circle. A group of selected alumni who assist with outreach and provide feedback on the college's master plan to the college administration. We also are active in developing alumni chapters, recruiting, and fund raising on behalf of the college. Back in college 2010-2012, having been laid off in a major downsizing. Getting an AA in Computer Support - DBA focus from Harrisburg Area Community College, maintining a 4.0 average in the first two semesters.
