Howard's Story

I was born in New York City and moved to Greenwich in 5th grade. Stayed there until going to college in Ohio, triple majoring in chemistry, pre-med, and motocross racing (the last was not school sanctioned ;-). I graduated, thoroughly sick of school, moved to Grand Rapids, MI, where I was the service manager for two motorcycle dealerships by day, and played jazz guitar around the various clubs by night. For a couple of years this was cool, but I started feeling restless and intellectually dead, finding myself reading my old organic chem books at night, so went for my M.S. at Central Michigan Univ. in Mt. Pleasant. After 2 really successful years there, I went to Evanston, IL, and earned my Ph.D. in 3 years in synthetic organic chemistry in 1980. My first job was at Aldrich Chemical Co. in Milwaukee, the world's largest supplier of research chemicals. My first position was P.I. of a synthetic group to the National Cancer Institute, preparing 100g quantities of potential anticancer drugs already proven in vitro. My second position was manager of the pilot plant, where half the business was "catalog service" and the other half was contract work, usually preparing large (several kilos to over a ton) quantities of pharmaceutical intermediates. My first love was academics, so after 3.5 yrs at Aldrich, I began my academic career at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL. I rose through the ranks quickly, mainly to get it over with, receiving tenure in four years and making Full Professor in five years - a record that still stands! :-) I received very high student evaluations and ran a large, productive, externally funded research group where we invented new organic reactions, developed new pharmaceuticals, streamlined the syntheses of existing agents, and established an international reputation. In my 21+ years, I had 130 research students, includ...Expand for more
ing several dozen M.S. candidates and a few postdocs. We published around 60 refereed research papers and several book chapters, brought in over $1.5M in extramural research funding. I presented research seminars at every research university within a 300-500 mi. radius. My career was short-circuited when I developed reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) in 2005, forcing me to retire under disability in 2007. I now live in Champaign, IL, where we've actually lived since 1990, between April and November, and in Pahoa, HI (on the Big Island) between December and March. It was either this or move someplace that's warmer all year, and we really love Champaign. See, RSD is a disease of the central nervous system, and its major symptom is a screaming, hot, lancinating nerve pain that is serious exacerbated by cold, since it also causes peripheral vasocon-striction. My partner retired at the same time, so we commute between Champaign and Pahoa every year. If one has to retire early from a job he really, really, loves, it's nice to be able to do this. I remain active in the chemical community by refereeing manuscripts submitted for publication, proposals submitted for funding, going to ACS meetings, and reading tons of current chemical literature. I also consult for two pharmaceutical companies. I've also remained a very active and successful musician, putting myself through college with my great Ohio band, and had an even better one in graduate school, which played mainly fusion, jazz, etc. I've been playing guitar for 45 years now and own about 2 dozen axes. I always wanted to be a physician when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a coolgoal idea. As it turns out, they were not far off. I always wanted to be a physician when I grew up.
