Howard's Story

Life Update: 1/5/09 Happy New Year. Just wanted to say hey to all who have been stopping by to visit. Ive been adding photos as i find them and scan them, specially for the skydiving requests, but sometimes find a blast from the past. Take care everybody, best wishes. Oh Yeah, 2506 jumps to date. End Update: Graduated 1973 would have been Dover High, but the my parents moved to Rochester my senior year, so I missed being with my friends on graduation day. Folks may remember me for the Track Team (Pole Vault, hurdles) or football, although I did not play my junior year. Joined the Army in 1973, Petroleum Laboratory Specialist, got out in three years, went to Alabama and now work for NASA on the International Space Station. Currently an instructor for the United States Parachute Association (Accelerated Free Fall)also, with over 2000 jumps and still jumping at age 46 (miracles never cease). Have lost almost all contact with friends from the class of 1972 and 1973.....Just wondering how the hell everybody is and wishing everybody the best.....it's been a long time...... Update 3/25/08: Hey to all my visitors, guess i need to check in more often. 6 years or so since i updated this.....I haven't heard about a 35 year reunion, but i hope you all have at least a little get together. Think "Party"....if you can still, well, you know.....best wishes to you. Oh 2471 jumps to date, slacking off because this dam workload...... Workplace Update: 1/5/09 Still working flight operation for Ares 1 Upper Stage. Work work work. Thats my work update.....not that i hate it, it's just so much work......Expand for more
..interrupting my skydiving! End Update: Currently working as development and operations lead for automated payload operations for the International Space Station. We use a new language from Charles Stark Draper Laboratory called Timeliner. This allows us to write programs that can do the same job as ground controller's including autonomous commanding based on known signatures. I am the designer of the first "HAL" system for NASA (wasn't a good acronym to pick), and will be implemented in three parts. The final part to be implemented will contain voice capability. The HAL system can be programmed to run processing plants, Nuclear Power plants, a cities street light system, AMTRAK or any other related electric train system, or even your home if you wish. Power grid operations may be the first commercial application we attempt in the near future. I just received the Astronauts Personal Achievement Award (Silver Snoopy) for this work and have also received NASA's Space Flight Awareness Award, the two highest awards a civilian can receive. So......if you ever hear about "HAL" on the Space Station, you know the guy who created it first and no code was used from the movie....... :)) Update: Hal System 3 is now 3 and half years old and still running on the ISS. Autonomous 24 by 7 payload command and control, plug and play as we change the science loads. I started working on the Ares 1 rocket, upper stage flight operations, about a year ago. This is the shuttle replacement, and it's pretty unique is one word for it......anyways first stage test is about a year away....and the world turns.
