Howard (Hap)'s Story

Life My life profile would actually fill several volumes. In a nutshell: Born in Hawaii. Grew up in Oregon, Colorado, Florida, and Oklahama. Attended 13 schools in 12 years. Went to College in Colo.,New Mex., and Texas. Served in USNavy-4yrs,1mo. Married 3 times and was blessed with one child with each wife. Worked in the aerospace/electronics/communications industry until 1989 when I decided to be an automechanic for a while. I"ve worked on a few inventions of my own and with others, but I hold no patents yet. I now live in Glendale,Az. _JUNE 2005. Good news. I have one more blood test to determine the success or failure of nine months of chemotherapy(hell). I've tested negative twice since last December so I'm optimistic that I'll be officially released sometime this month. I hope none of you ever have to submit to chemo (tell them you want to wait for nanobots!). The side effects of treatment and the permanent changes to your mind and body can make you question if it was all worth it. Because of all the trauma and mental confusion of treatment I removed myself from the mainstream of life and subsequent contact with friends. If you think I snubbed you by not answering your email or attending reunions please understand the reasons and try communicating again. I'm dissapointed that Classmates eliminated the links to personal websites. I'll perform an experiment now and see if this is accepted - hapax23.nstemp.com/index.html. Meawhile, if anyone would like to say "Howdy" or discuss the "reason for existance" or any other subject please get in touch with me. Howard (Howie) (Hap) Hampson... School I went to school in Aurora (off and on) from 1949 to 1956. We rented our house out while my dad did his thing in the Korean War. Basically I attended the old grade school(Central?) in 4th and 5th grade, the old junior high in 7th and 8th grade and then Aurora Central in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade. I was vice president of my freshman class, president of my sophomore class, and vice president of the student council my junior year. My class was the first sophomore class EVER to win color day! At the end of my junior year I left to live on my stepdad's cattle ranch in Oklahoma. Dick LaTorra, Mike Straus, and Harry Holloway spent part of that summer on the ranch with me. Dick and Mike went to school with me at Wagoner High School in Wagoner, Oklahoma. There have been times I wished I had stayed at Aurora but I probably would have gotten in too much trouble. Dick LaTorra and I were in the Navy together and were roommates in Denver after our enlistment was over. Dick lives in Leadville now and is known locally as "A frame" Dick. ayed in touch all these years. I currently live in Glendale,Arizona and I try to live on my Social Security Check (Ha-Ha). I spend a lot of time riding my motorcycle and doing art projects on my computer. I just renewed my membership in Mensa and hope to meet some new friends there. I will respond to any correspondence from former schoolmates. College My days at USC were limited by the fact that I was there as a result of the Manpower Developement and Training Act, a program proposed by John F. Kennedy. It was probably experimental in the sense that we (MDTAers) were subjected to the first two years of engineering school in only 12 or 13 months. I was recruited by Texas Instruments. The rest of my college career consisted of brief enrollments at the University of New Mexico Extension,Taos,NM and at Dallas Community College,Dallas, Texas. Workplace I worked at quite a few menial jobs before being recruited on campus by Texas Instruments.(1964) I spent nearly 10 years at T.I. Dallas and worked in many depts. Most of my time was spent in the SC division in various QC roles. I spent some time on a TI Scientific Survey Vessel doing oceanographic work for the US Navy. When I left TI I was a failure analyst of opto devices and had a lab in the dark reccesses of the "space frame" in the SC bldg. After I left TI I worked at several "Black Box" cos. that were mostly involved in govt. contracts. I never seemed to work at one place long enough to have a vested interest in retirement and so I try to exist on Social Security and my wits. I would enjoy hearing from any of my former workmates. Military My Company 568 in San Diego "brigaded" and we thought we were pretty special. Then reality set in at my first duty station - Great Lakes NTC. After 11 months of trying to finish ETA school and a short pause in the brig I was finally sent to the fleet. Ah Norfolk, sweet Norfolk! I was assigned to a great little destroyer in Desron22,Desdiv222, the USS Haynsworth DD 700.What a life. Two Med Cruises,COMMIDEASTFORCE(You know who you were),Mombasa,Kenya,Karachi,Djibouti,Bera-Bera,Ade n,Massaua - If you were ever in any of these garden spots you know what our guys are faceing over there now. God help them. We did have some fun times tho, especially in Barcelona and Palma. (I wonder if Alicia is still alive?) Some good libery Stateside. Rockport/Camden,Maine during the Lobster Festival - OH yeah! And GITMO? I never figured that arrangement out, but I know Castro cut our water supply off once. I think that was around the time of the "Bay of Pigs" fiasco. I'd like to hear from anybody that was on my ship or was at the same places as I was.
