Howard's Story

Although I was in the Class of ‘61, I dropped out of school in 1960 to enlist in the U.S. Air Force. I went to air traffic control technical school at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS and while I was there I was recruited into the Air Force’s Combat Control Teams (CCT). I saw combat in Vietnam and Laos, mainly as a Forward Air Controller (FAC) controlling air strikes for Air Force, Navy and allied aircraft. I also provided command control communications support for Navy SEALS and Army Special Forces units. In 1968 I switched career fields into Data Communications which turned out to be the best career move of my life. My wife, Evelyn, of over 55 years and I were in Turkey where daughter was born and we were stationed at numerous locations in the U.S. and twice in the Philippines. Along the way I acquired a BSEE from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in ‘75 and an MS in Human Resource Management for the New School of Social Research, now just New School in ‘81. I retired from the Air Force in 1982 and went to work for Mastercard as a Network Design Engineer, eventually rising to become the Director of Global Network Engineering. t. I was back doing design work again, designing MasterCard’s Global IP videoconferencing network, at the time, the world’s largest privately owned videoconferencing net. I retired from Mastercard in 2003, started my own consulting business and designed IP videoconferencing nets for the California State University system, the U.S. Senate and Edward Jones. I retired for good in 2007. We now live in Troy, IL, about 21 miles northeast of St. Louis, MO and 12 miles north of the farm where Evelyn was born and raised. She and her sister now own the farm. We spend our winters at our place on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques and we travel the world. We’ve sailed all over the Caribbean, our favorite cities in Europe are Barcelona, Spain and Istanbul, Turkey. We’ve traveled to South America, and New Zealand, been on photo safaris in Tanzania and South Africa. We’ve hosted high school exchange students from Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Germany and Turkey. From our New Zealand photos you can tell that I’m a total Tolkien freak, I have everything that he’s written plus an extremely rare LP of his nephew and son recited poetry and singing songs in High Elvish and Dwarvish. I firmly believe that living by the neck and squeeze every bit of its juice.
