Howard's Story
Howard (B.F.A., Clarion University of PA; M.F.A. Penn State University) joined George Mason University in 1993. His previous work experience includes several years as a draper in New York City, creating costumes for Broadway, Hollywood films, and television. Mr. Kurtz has also designed costumes at many regional and local theaters. He was honored with the Helen Hayes Award in Outstanding Costume Design for Dream of a Common Language, produced at Theater of the First Amendment, George Mason University.

, as well as an introductory theater course to non-majors. Professor Kurtz has received both the Fenwick Fellowship Award and the Teaching Excellence Award. Howard has designed sets, costumes, and directed productions for the GMU Players and outside the university for various theatrical organizations.
Mr. Kurtz is a member of The Costume Society of America, United States Institute Theater Technology, United Scenic Artists and is the Artistic Associate in Costume Design for the Olney Theatre Center, Olney, Maryland. He serves as the costume and textiles curator for the Hillwood Estate Museum and Gardens in Washington D.C. the former residence of the Post cereal heiress, Marjorie Merriweather Post.
