Hubert's Story
I graduated from Phoenix Technical School in Phoenix, AZ in 1954. My major was radio & television shop. In my junior & senior years in High School I was the projectionist at the Rio Theatre in South Phoenix. I slept through most of my senior classes in high school because of working so late at night at the Rio Theatre.
I also played music in a trio called the "Melody Makers" with Bob & Ernie Platek. We played often at the Arizona Hay Ride in Phoenix and often played on the Ray Odem radio show. I can't remember the station call letters.
After graduation in 1954 I spent a summer running the projectors at the drive-in theatre located between Globe & Miami.
I moved to California at age 19 and became friends with Eddie Cochran. We use to have jam sessions all the time at Eddie's house or at Bob Bull's house. We also played in some night clubs. Eddie was a member of Local 47 Musicians Union in LA and signed for me to become a member of the union without an audition.
Prior to Eddie becoming famous he did several demo recordings at a recording studio in Hollywood. Bob and I also played on the recordings.
When Eddie started becoming famous Bob & I use to hang around Liberty Recording Studio while Eddie was recording "Sittin' in the Balcony." One evening Eddie asked Bob Bull and me to play music with him at a 20th Century Fox party. There was over 2,000 people in attendance.
I was very sad to hear when Eddie was killed in April 1960 in England in a Taxi crash returning to the airport in England.
I continued my music on lead guitar with a group called "K...Expand for more
ip Tyler and the Flips." We recorded the song "Lets Monkey Around" for Art Leboe who was a famous radio DJ in Los Angeles. I also played lead guitar on another recording.
I met Lora Hallberg who became my wife in 1959. We subsequently had two children, a daughter Virginia Lee Raper and a son Paul Leon Raper. The marriage lasted 8-1/2 years.
At age 20 I went to work at North American Aviation which later became Rockwell and today is a division of Boeing. I worked there for 21 years and became a senior development engineer.
At age 40 I started my own business as a Talent Agent for film & tv in Hollywood, CA. At about age 43 I moved the business to Beverly Hills, CA. I represented many soap stars and other TV & film celebrities.
At age 50 I shut down my Talent Agency in Beverly Hills and moved to Flagstaff, AZ where I continued booking stars & celebrities for personal appearances throughout the U.S. and Canada. That is what I still do today at Vegas88.com
In my early 30's I took up ballroom dancing at Dale's Dance Studio in Whittier, CA. I then started competition swing dancing and danced in over 400 contests including the 1973 World Swing Dance Championships at the Palladium in Hollywood, CA. I also developed many dance web sites which can be found at SwingDance.com or DanceCorner.com
In my late 60's I took up International Standard Ballroom dancing which I do to this day. Dancing is a great way to stay healthy.
One time I asked a doctor, "what is the secret to longevity?" He said, "breath often." So far that recommendation has worked very well.
