Hugh Geiger:  

Hugh is married to Sheelagh Mercier and has three children: Erin (19) attending second year mechanical engineeering at UBC and starting an 8 month Coop work term this May with NewGold in Kamloops, Heather (17) whose language talents took her to Madrid for 5 weeks this past summer as an Au-Pair and is looking forward to the first year Queen's BSc program at Herstmonceux Castle in England at the Bader International Studies Instutute, and Ross (15) who continues to play elite lacrosse and is eyeing an NCAA scholarship at John Hopkins to study science or engineering. Sheelagh works at the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation - a job she loves. A highlight for everyone was a trip to South America a couple of years ago, including the Galapagos and Machu Picchu. The kids are active in many sports (Erin had a tryout with UBC Thunderbirds Women's Ice Hockey Team), with sports and tournaments and driving and coaching now replacing the numerous camping, canoeing, sea kayaking and hiking trips of former years. Hugh finds solace in an afternoon here or there canoeing and fly-fishing on the Bow River. Hugh attended Loyalist Collegiate Vocational Institute and thought that 5 years of high school was a bit much. Eager to make his fame and fortune, he attended Queen's University [BSc. (Eng) 1983, MSc. (Eng) 1989] and then University of Calgary [PhD 2001], followed by 5 years as a lecturer and researcher at UofC and then a year when the whole family lived in France while Hugh worked for OPERA (Total) in Pau - all told another 29 years of education and research (well, minus a few years of skiing).
