Ida's Story

Life I grew up in Kinloch Mo,but we lived on the side of the street that was claimed by Ferguson Mo. So I went to Ferguson Schools. This town was all White except for my side of the street. In 1954 when I graduated from grade school,I had to by the intergration law attend Ferguson High school, which was all White. I attended there happly until my parents moved us to the city of St Louis in my senior year where I was forced to graduate from Soldan High School after one year. I attended Harris-Stowe College Junior College for 2 years. I transfered to Washington University for one year.Because of Lack of funds I could not return. My desire was to be a Medical Record Librarian. I decided to go into nursing, and became a License Practical Nurse. I worked for 26 years as a LPN while being a wife and mother of three sons.I decided after my sons left home to change professions.I took interest in real estate.I attended real estate and passed the state boards for license.I worked sucessfully for 17yrs in sales. I continue to keep my license active to do referral work. I was forced to retire at 57yrs because of a bad back condition. My husband and I divorced after 31yrs of marriage. Our three adult sons have given us 6 grand-children and one great grand child. I keep myself busy with many things. I am h...Expand for more
appy, but I think I want to get a partner to share my life with again. So I am looking! for anyone that maybe interested. That's Ida Clay Turner. School 2004 is a special year for me and for those that began school in 1954. It was of course the first year of the desegregation of all public schools in the United States. I being an African-American truly feel a since of pride having been the first in changing history in our nation. There were only 9 Black students in a class of a school with more than 900 students. Yet,I survive and advanced to graduation. If there are more students of Ferguson High that were part of those days,I would like to say, thanks for helping to make it happen for me. Ida Clay-Turner, 1954-1958 College I was part of he junior college section of Harris-Stowe, which was at that time a teacher's college. I had to work and study for college,so those days were difficult. I remembered I did pledge for one of the Greek sororities, and of course I quit when they had me scrubbing the school front steps with a tooth brush. My studies were science as a pre-requirement for Medical Librarian. I attended Washington University after two years at Harris. I had to leave for lack of funds in the second year. I turn the science class credits to nursing, which I worked in for 26 years.
