Randy's Story
After Western, I went to Guilford College in North Carolina and got kicked out for a year. Then I became a nightclub entertainer (solo act, singer) and played at clubs around the country. My manager was Mike Schreibman. I went back to Guilford and graduated with a BA in philosophy. The year I graduated, I got involved in the labor movement as a community organizer for the Textiles Workers of America. I continued in music doing concerts and playing on picket lines.
I went to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for a masters in history and completed all coursework for the degree. But instead of doing my thesis, I got a fellowship to the Ph.D program in political science at the Univ. of Tenn.
I got an MA and a PhD in political science, and taught college for 5 years. I then worked in state government in Kentucky as head of the policy office of the Kentucky Energy Cabinet. I continu...Expand for more
ed my music as well, playing banjo in a couple of bluegrass bands. I worked there for 6 years and went to the US Senate where I worked on the Leadership staff of the Senate Democratic Leader.I worked there about 5 years and then went to work at CSX Transportation in Jacksonville, Florida, as Assistant Vice President and Assistant to the President/CEO of the company.
I moved to Washington DC to work as Vice President of the Edison Electric Institute and retired in 2000 after working there for 8 years. Now I spend my days reading and working on a two year degree in landscape design and one in photography. I have three sons (all married) and four grand children. Two of my sons live within a few blocks, and one lives in Richmond. I’m doing a lot of work in the labor movement in Northern Virginia, local Democratic politics, way to the Left, and I’m a BIG supporter of Bernie Sanders for President.
