Ilene's Story

Hi. I didn't do much in high school, except heal from low-self-worth and poor grades. I began at Evanston Township High School in ca. 1962. Due to circumstances, I moved in with my aunt and uncle and three cousins in Lincolnwood--an enriching and encouraging family and neighborhood for growing up. Transferring to Niles West, my grades improved from poor to okay if not good enough for the honor's roll. I think I graduated in the upper-half; big whip, but I held my head high and still wanted to be beautiful, fall in love, get married and have four beautiful children. I had their names chosen already: David, Rachel, Ariel, and of course, Lisa. Well, none of that kind of life happened for or against me. Soooo. . . . jumping to the 1980s, I enrolled in college and majored in English and in Speech/Performing Arts at NEIU and was soon given the status of an honor's scholar. I graduated cum laude because I had to work for a living while I was going to school. That's my excuse for not achieving magna cum laude. Suma cum laude? They don't have lives. . .sorry if I have offend anyone ;) I continued toward my MA in English. It took me forever to complete the MA requirements, but in 1996 I began teaching and tutoring in English and almost all of the Liberal Arts requiring...Expand for more
reading and writing at one of the CCCs (City Colleges of Chicago). I'm still here and have taught pre-credit (remedial) English, college English and the Humanities. I have also been tutoring as one of the professional tutoring specialists in our Writing Lab. All tutors in the Lab must have no less that a Bachelor's Degree. And some of us have earned our Master's Degree, like me! (I mean, such as myself--whatever.) I do hope I will be able to afford to retire sooner rather than later. Oh, and as some of you may know through stories or experience, higher education is being taught by adjunct (part-time) teachers at a rate of 75% part-time and 25% full-time. Tenure for part-time adjuncts? I have been dedicated to this College for almost 18 years. I have seniority, but in name only. . . . Anyway, this is me in a nutshell In high school, I was neither a collegian (collegiate) nor was I a grease, but I do like Grease and America Graffiti. I write poetry and well, I just write. . .my essence in a nutshell? I also sing better than ever because, in part, I stopped smoking over 7 years ago and I'm never going back! And that's the truth, so there! No, I won't give the raspberries because that might be too tacky. Good-nigh Mrs. Kalabash, wherever you are! Ya-cha-cha-cha!
