Irene's Story
After graduating Raritan I attended Brookdale the first year it was open for Medical Lab Technician. I didn't return for the second year because in 1970 I traveled on an old school bus with a group of friends. Ended up in California for a little while. Returned to NJ at summer’s end. Worked as a Nurses Aide in a nursing home in Hazlet after I returned from California. I entered the US Navy in 1974 and was a Hospital Corpsman, (General duty, then Operating room technician) for 5 years. Challenged the LPN test and passed. Most of my time was spent in California and the Philippines. I returned to Brookdale, entered the first upgrade program for LPN to RN (only one summer and one year long) graduated with a Registered Nursing degree in 1983. Spent time working in the OR in Point Pleasant Hospital, which no longer exists. Moved to Boulder, Colorado. Worked at Denver General Hospital in the OR (referred to as “the knife and gun club”, guess why). Obtained a BS in Sociology from Excelsior College in 1989. Moved to TX and switched to working Neonatal ICU. I now live in Lago Vista, Texas after also living in Minnesota (brrr). My son Joshua is in IT-software engineer. I am Reminding everyone to get their colonoscopy!

d surgery (2016) and will now be fine, but ever vigilant. I am still working and very active in my faith and am also in a group called "Red Bench,” part of Interfaith Action of Central Texas for interfaith conversations that matter, in Austin, and Cedar Park TX. I participate as a table host in round table discussions at Red Bench (when COVID19 isn’t here) and I am also a member of the North Shore Democrats of Travis County where I'm on the Action Committee. Just became the Democratic Precinct Chair in August 2019 for Travis County Precinct 373. January 2019 I joined the Recreation and Park Advisory Committee for the City of Lago Vista and joined Better Angels of Central TX in Austin to help depolarize the current political atmosphere. Just saw the documentary on Molly Ivins last night, "Raise Hell". Was a must-see for me! Thank goodness, it's a nice ride. Really had fun at the 50 year Raritan high school reunion. In January 2020 I became a Board member to North Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce and just recently in August 2020 became President of North Shore Democrats of Travis County and graduated with my BSN finally! Better late than never I guess. Still Democratic Precinct chair for Precinct #373. Everyone stay safe and healthy.
