Ivy's Story

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Washington area photographer Ivy Bigbee‘s image of Cirque du Soleil's "La Nouba" Pierrot appears on the front cover of Silvershotz. Cover attached. Cirque du Soleil granted Ivy unprecedented access to all aspects of several Cirque productions to photograph and write about its shows. Despite the strict copyright rules imposed by Cirque du Soleil, the international entity granted Silvershotz permission for the use of a selection of images for the cover and article. Ivy Bigbee has an impeccable pedigree and is known for her commission by the U.S. Postal Department, which resulted in the POW/MIA commemorative postage stamp unveiled at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC, on Memorial Day, 1995. The Silvershotz feature of 11 selected photographers across the USA from the members of (WIPI ) Women in Photography International marks an historic point in the fifteen-year publishing reign of the journal. Silvershotz is a well-known and successful brand easily found in Borders book stores and other chains across the USA and Europe from 2002 until the closure of Borders in 2012. (A total of 470,000 journals were distributed in this time frame). The articles and images consist of 45 pages featuring selected works of 11 Women in International Photography members in the final printed Silvershotz journal, Volume 8, Edition 5. April is the transition month from print to an online interactive journal. . WIPI is a not-for-profit association promoting the works of women photographers. The Los Angeles-based organization’s history began in the 1980s with a series of exhibitions and lectures in southern California. The year 2000 marked the start of the twenty-first century's unprecedented growth for WIPI. Jean Ferro and Nancy Clendaniel joined photography historian Peter Palmquist to reorganize WIPI and advance its growth to the online resource center and archive it is today. In tapping the rich and diverse source of photography within WIPI members’ work, Silvershotz, with its signature layouts—lavish color, tack-sharp, pristine reproductions and advertizing-free content—is devoting 45 pages to eye-popping work from eleven WIPI photographers: cityscapes by Lilyan Aloma, the fine art equine photography of Merrie Asimow, mixed media still lifes by Jean Ferro Cirque du Soleil portraits by Ivy Bigbee, documentary photography of Cathy Greenblat, Amie Vanderford, Betty Press and Kathryn Jacobi; nature photographs of Joyce P. Lopez and Wendi Schneider; and digitally-derived color compositions by Joann Scherf. Complete feature is available at women in photography dot org Regards Clive Waring Editor Silvershotz _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Life Following the 1969 helicopter crash and death in Viet Nam of my husband, Lt. Jim Spencer, our son, Tony and I joined my parents in Washington, DC., where my stepfather was attending the National War College, and where Jim's remains were interred at Arlington National Cemetery. Returning to college in 1970, with an aim to study medicine, I discovered photography & writing as vehicles for grieving, then met my present husband, John Bigbee, MD, who was on duty at the Ft Belvoir Emergency Room on a night where I sought medical care for Tony. A year and a half later, John and I married, traveling ...Expand for more
the world (living in Iceland for two years), where I became editor for Woman to Woman, the NATO Wives' magazine. Following Tony's 1989 Naval Academy graduation (Jim's and my son received an early nomination to Annapolis) and after our second son, Adam began his doctoral studies in special ed law, I returned to college, where I graduated Summa cum laude w/degrees in photography & literature. While teaching college photography, I began to exhibit my art photography in juried shows, & to lecture, while serving as art curator for the Karpeles Museum, Jacksonville, FL. I authored "Optical Allusions: an Art Photographer's Poems," and penned a monograph for Art Calendar magazine. In 1996, my POW/MIA commemorative postage stamp (120 million reproductions) was unveiled at the Viet Nam Memorial; that event & details of my career were profiled in People, Newsweek, photography publications & numerous dailies. The postage stamp holds significance for me because I styled a secret "S" in the dog tag chain portion of the stamp's design to honor Jim's memory, marking the sacrifice he willingly made for his country. I grieve for Jim still, mistakingly seeing his face in crowds, in dreams, and resurrecting him in poems. Other photographs of mine have appeared on HBO's "Autopsy," on the Library of Congress "American Memories" web site, on book jackets and international venues. My photography has been the subject of 8 solo museum exhibitions; I was also granted exclusive access to photograph two Cirque du Soleil productions (Google-able). I have worked in the documentary sector of photography, and my stock photographs (represented by Superstock, Inc.) have appeared on a Japanese precription sleeping pill container and on a book jacket on spirituality. My "Recent Angels" photo series is perhaps my most fun project. Selected photographs of my alternative photography are viewable on alternativephotography and womeninphotography. I am Washington, DC-based, maintaining a digital studio while also completing a novel based on my award-winning novella, "Aunt Chattie's Beads." A high point of my life was swimming with dolphins; two others: meeting/photographing author John Updike, & photographing David Bowie. My husband, John, retired as a Navy Capt.and practices family medicine in Northern VA. We have 4 grandchildren, including boy/girl twins (Jim's grandchildren, who he never saw). Promoting and disseminating my work on & off-line takes most of my energy. These efforts represent a grasp at immortality, as I am presently battling breast cancer for the second time. Recently, I recorded two podcasts for "Oneminutehowto" (one is titled "how to keep your teeth for life," as dental health is my "soapbox"). I think my ambition & drive are attempts to compensate NOW for caring more about boys and clothes than academics during my OHS years! I would adore to hear from anyone who might remember me, as I recall you all with great affection! Update 2007: happy to report I received my final chemo for a 2nd breast cancer go-round. The year of 2006 was a trainwreck of DVTs, a broken arm, numerous chemo-related ills & 3 hospitalizations. Not complaining, however, when you consider the alternative is six feet under. I correspond with a few OHSers, but since my longevity is questionable, would love to hear from others who thrilled to pep rallies and cruised the A & W.
