J.C.'s Story
After high school, the call of "go west, young man" took me to California, where I had many, many adventures. I lived in San Luis Obispo for five years, and was then swept up into Silicon Valley in the 90's (you may remember I was into computers). I did the whole ride there: multiple companies, going public, going bust... the whole dot-com play book.
Like many of my computer-head, 80-hours-a-week peers, I got burned out and dropped out of the high tech cutting edge and went high-touch instead, switching careers to hypnotherapist. I think the mind and body demand balancing after a while, you know? And I was too tech for too long. about three years, but as beautiful as SLO town is, the economy is somewhat lacking, you might say.
So I trekked up north to join my parents and sister in Portland, Oregon. I now do web site development, edit and produce online courses for continuing education, and software for associations and non-profit groups. I live with my fabulous life co-star girlfriend, who is a writer and podcast producer and a bit of an Internet celebrity in the crafting world.
I love living in Portland. Apart from the rain, which takes a bit to get used to. The transit system is so good, you can actually live without a car! I sold my car in 2005 and my girlfriend sold hers in 2007. Light rail, bus, bike and walking is great for health, reading time, and the wallet.
