J.D.'s Story
Life
After leaving Barboursville High in 88, I went to Marshall and graduated in December of 93 with my undergraduate teaching degree in English and Spanish grades 5-12. I want to thank all of my Cabell County teachers who helped me be what I am today and who supported me with their attitudes, example, and patience. Thank you so much Mrs. Jenkins, Ms. Daniels, Ms. Irwin, Mr. Hogg, and Ms. Margaret Smith (Barboursville High) and Ms. Camp, Ms. Effie Smith and Ms. Forinash (Ona Junior High).and Ms. Poynter, Ms. Porter, Ms. Edmunds, Ms. Varney, Ms. Call, and Ms. Barnett (Nichols Elementary) You were my inspiration and you made a difference.
I taught 8th grade Language Arts one year at Barboursville Middle which brought back a lot of memories since it was in the old high school building.
I then went to Roane County High School in 1996 and taught Spanish until 2000.
In August 1999 I graduated again from Marshall with my Mas...Expand for more
ters in Secondary Education specializing in Spanish after studying abroad in Spain that year.
In July 2000 I went to Bolivia in South America and taught English at the Santa Cruz Cooperative School and worked as a missionary with the Awana program in Santa Cruz until June 2006. I learned more in those 6 years about not only Spanish but about life and who I truly am through some unbelievable life-changing experiences.
I am currently living on the campus of the University of Texas at Arlington and studying for my second and third MA degrees..this time a dual major in Spanish and TESOL. I was employed by the Dallas Independent School District my first year here while teaching Spanish to mostly Mexican students in an inner city school. It was interesting to say the least.
I am now a graduate assistant in the Spanish department at UT Arlington and a full time student. I hope to do my PhD in Spanish or TESOL in the future.
