JOHN's Story
After high school, I joined the Air Force and went to Lackland AFB for basic training. After 5 weeks there I got transferred to Amarillo AFB for technical school and the three weeks of phase two of basic training. Then the air force sent me to Carswell AFB in Ft. Worth to work on KC-135As and B-52Fs. I went TDY (temporary duty) to Andersen AFB, Guam, where I helped to launch my jet to VietNam to kill monkeys and anything else that got in the way. When I returned to the ConUs, I got orders to transfer to Chatereaux AB, France. There I worked on a lot of different airframes until I got transferred to Torrojon AB, Madrid, Spain. I did the same thing there as in France. I separated from the air force in Aug of 1967, and went to work building F-111A thru F, including the FB-111s. In July of 1971 I returned to the air force to finish out my career of 23 years. I became a fligh...Expand for more
t engineer on C-141A & B aircraft and saw a lot of this ole Earth. I logged over 25000 hours as a flight engineer and only missed seeing Africa. It was the only continent that I didn't get to see except from the air. All of that all during the cold war. I even went to Russia once. After my career in the air force, I worked as a civilian at the Jet Center in Van Nuys, Ca. and then at Avjet in Burbank, Ca. I have some friends in high places, such as Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson, John Travolta, just to name a few. I have also met several others in the movie industry. Good people, most of them. I retired in 2009 and now work for a CEO selling used but good condition parts from Gulfstream G-IIs, G-IIIs and G-IVs. He has been at it for only a year or so and is making money hand over fist. I am in the inspection end of it. I am a contractor for them. I set my own hours. Love it.
