JUNE's Story
June is an independent and self sufficient, stroke survivor of 13+ years, having raised both her children virtually on her own after becoming a divorcee just two years prior to that fateful evening. She attended New Bury Jr College and Bristol Community College as well as having taken courses with Bay State Jr College in Boston. She is former New England Patriots cheerleader 1976, 1977 and part of 1978 when all NFL cheer leading squads were transitioning into the programs you now see today. However, June's cheer leading career did not end there. She began coaching cheerleaders first, with the former St. Anthony High School their final year before going on to both the Old Rochester Regional High School Bulldogs and the Wareham High School Vikings She then continued on with coaching, a role that she enjoyed immensely, within the community on a volunteer basis for the Y.C.V.A.A, C.Y.O., (Our Lady of The Assumption) before finishing out with the New Bedford Bears of Pop Warner. She also taught and assisted many young women who were preparing to try out for their high school's cheer squad on an individual basis so that they could receive the personal attention needed in order to be able to compete for one of those positions. Many of these as well as those she coached went on to cheer at N.B.H.S., D.H.S. and college. One of these fine young ladies who was originally from the former St Anthony Elementary School (WHEN SHE RETURNED TO COACH AGAIN FOR THE SCHOOL-C.Y.O.(both her children were students at the St Anthony elementary school as well) of whom was the "first female athlete" at New Bed ford High School to receive a prestigious highest award usually given to a male athlete. This bright young lady received the award in her senior year while a N.B.H.S. Whalers cheerleader! She also went on to cheer while a student at U.R.I. Another young lady June had the pleasure of coaching, at Wareham, went on to cheer while a student at the Northeastern University in Boston. During her coaching years both June's children were exposed to the benefits of sports and participated as well after years of tagging along with their mom to all of the games and sometimes, even the practices, until they were of appropriate age to participate themselves. June also has three beautiful grandsons that were given to her by her son of whom has been a semi professional football player for almost a decade. First, with the Two Time Division AA Whaling City Clippers Championship teams (2007 and 2008) of the N.E.F.L. He played four years with the team from 2007 through 2010 and was voted to the N.E.F.L. All-Star team the last three years of his tenure with the team. He is a former teammate of Dartmouth High School alumnus, Chuck Bouchard of whom was the team's place kicker, during those two championship seasons. Her son has since been playing for the Bay State Buccaneers of the E.F.L. out of Brockton (City of Champions) at their home field of Bridge Water State University (formerly known as Bridge Water State College) and college choice of another D.H.S. Alumnus and football player, Tom Cadieux. (Yes, Tom I remember that great INT during our senior "Parents Day" game) June's daughter, having first been offered a full four year scholarship to UMass Dartmouth, choosing to and ultimately, attending and graduating from the N.E.I.T. of Warwick, RI class of 2007 (BILLIE JEAN KING-GUEST SPEAKER) and 2011 (CURT SCHILLING-GUEST SPEAKER) , having earned both an Associates Degree in Web Design and Multi Media and then following up with a Bachelor's of Science Degree for Network Engineering. She now works for one the largest medical supply companies in the world, Covidien, (A company that should be familiar to all five of Boston's professional sports since this global company supports our teams as evident of their company banners all over the arenas of each team's ve...Expand for more
nue) in the role of technical support. June's son did not graduate high school despite his attempts to continue because he chose to stay home and take care of his mom during those first years of her continued therapeutic recovery efforts. And it wasn't so much what she wasn't able to do. It was more of what she was going to or might try to do, having once been a very active and independent working wife, mother and coach. Her son's concerns created an mental obstacle to his ability to concentrate in the classroom and he was subsequently "dropped by the school" (N.B.H.S.and not the other way around-We all know the story about the C.O.N.B. school system now, don't we?!) But, the sacrifice he made was well worth it all as he, himself has succeeded on and off the field despite the many setbacks this family encountered. As a result, his baby sister was able to continue on with her education (G.N.B.R.V.T.H.S-majoring in information technology) without the burden of having to be sole caregiver since it sometimes required a "woman's" assistance in the supportive care given by both to their mother. However, he has always been gainfully employed in between attending the Youth Build program and plans to return and attend an evening High School Diploma program.while splitting duties with his sister as their mom's Personal Care Attendant (AND PRIMARY CAREGIVERS-a job no family member applies for but, inherits upon unexpected illness) of which, both have since received financial compensation through a state government funded agency. As a result, June has managed to attend many special events, walks without the assistance of a cane or walker and had the use of a battery operated scooter in the past to help her with the main objective of stroke recovery: a return to the community as an active and productive citizen. She also worked part time seasonally, post stroke, with various after school programs and would like to return to school to study Cultural Anthropology so as to help prepare high school students for the sociological impact of college life because so that students taking this course would greatly benefit upon entering college, with a better understanding of all people of various ethnic and religious groups; their beliefs, cultural practices and traditions. Prior to this, June had spent many years in the healthcare field having worked for St Luke's Hospital, Medi Plex Rehab Center and the G N B C H C. June also was a teacher's aide for the Old Rochester Regional Junior High School for two years and ran an after school Sci-FI Program. She was a member of the D.H.S. color guard unit and fell in love with the game of football after first, having been affected by the 1971 movie, "Brian's Song", which prompted her to return to the sidelines years later by pursuing her original goal of wanting to have been a cheerleader while at D.H.S. In 1979 she placed first runner-up in the Miss New Bed Ford pageant after having participated in other various community pageants like: the annual Miss Cape Verdean Veterans for girls upon graduating high school, the Miss North Dartmouth Mall-(representing Dunkin Donuts having sought employment at the N.D.M. in various capacities:retail, etc), and the Miss Cape Verdean Pageant held in Raynham. It is a combination of "all of these personal endeavors" that played a significant role in her recovery. June also got to travel alittle after high school: Bermuda, Puerto Rico, St Thomas, NYC, Florida and Washington State. Thank you all for reading my profile and for all of your kindness, thoughts, wishes and support. Love, D.H.S. alumni. June P.S. I WILL BE UPLOADING PHOTOS VERY SOON. GOD BLESS! GO INDIANS!
