Jack's Story

Life 2/16/07 I thought after leaving the libray after thirty years I would be able to go directly into alternative medicine. Auto immunity has delay that in the form of exhausting psoriac arthritis and several other rheumatic involments which are quite diabling for now. If anyone has similar complications and would like to exchange ideas informally, please write. Jack 5/31/07 After i retred from the Library I had planned to volunteer and obtain an alternative health degree. In stead,I came down with an autoimmune disorder, psoriac arthritis. It is an immune malfunction similar to rheumatoid arthritis and is treated with remicade at between 1000 to 30000 dollars an infusion. There are also several other possible drugs. the cost is due due to the small number of cases. It is referred to as an orphan drug. Diagnosis took two and one half years. In the mean time I lost weight until I reached 138, my weight at graduation ( high school ). The weight loss reversed on its own but was upsettimg. DR.Joel Furman, an alternative physician, advised a diet based on fruits, vegetables and nuts with recepies consisting of foods that when blended suit the western taste. He advised 5000mg of fish oil daily. He noted autoimmune diseases are absent where the traditional western diet does not exist. (Almost). NO junk food allowed. The diet and fish oil are hoped to reduce inflammation in the body, certain foods and additives being more inflammatory than others for example meat more than vegetables. TO date some improvement, At lease I can get up some days and have moderate activity without the price next day. I do believe that if you ever have to deal with these rare disorders find a good rheumatologist even if it takes a number of tries. Also consider the possible effect of diet on health. Dr Furman for example, has written a numbber of diet books you can yry on your own. Also check his web site. SIf I improve enough hopefully I can get back to those plans. Stay Healthy Jack 6/12/06 the greatest challenge I've had: autoimmune disorders. If I can help anyone else who would like some support, please write. Jack 2/21/05 I graduated ST. John's grammar and high school in Paterson, NJ.. My high school graduation was June'1959. I remember just before starting class in 1955, I worried that I might not be able to compete. Grade school had been relatively non demanding but I wasn't so sure about what was to come. So I studied intensively to the point that four years passed before I knew it.But if I had it to do ...Expand for more
over,I would try to be less serious and more involved. I wish that I had a better understanding of human nature , more self confidence, and more of an impact for the better. I made some efforts to reconnect after Classmates, but people and interests change. It's a case, I guess, where one has to close the books and do better in the here and now. I do owe an appology to Grace for ruining the Parents Day play and the work she put into it. it was totally unitentional but I guess that doen't help much. I shouldn't forget Sister Thomas Eileen either, the moderator. I guess I just can't act. High school was remarkable for its lonelyness. I gave the impression that those issues didn't count. The reverse was the more real. Graduation night proved a point of reflection and questioning. Except for three or four good friends, I realized I left high school as I entered it. I had grades but not much else to show. I guess I didn't learn anything from the experience, because college life was again one demetional for me. School I graduated from St. John's Elementary School in 1954 and ST. John's High School in 1959. High school I remember primarily for the amount of time spent studying, and ironically never meeting my best friends. Still there are some I think of and wonder about. And to whom I wish I could just say " Hi ". I'll just have to watch Classmates more since time is fleeting and hope they find this site too. If not I will have to settle for wishing them well right here. Maybe the luck of the Irish will help in this case. The high school debating club, even though we rarely won, offered some interesting times. College was more of the same, except that the school thought that adding the ROTC program for two years would be a great idea. Actually, I still haven't reported for some assigned office duty. So much for my military career. After college, I attended law school for a brief time.I decided it wasn't what I expected. So I reentered St. Peters for some educational courses and taught in several high schools for about five years. I received my MLS degree from Rutgers in June of 1972 and a Masters of Arts degree from Seton Hall University in the 1970's. I Found American history to be my favorite field of study. Please drop a line if you care to. Jack. College 1959-1963 : St Peter's College, Jersey City, NJ. Heart Medal.
