Jack's Story

Life I left Grand Rapids in August 1963 when I joined the Air Force. I was part of that organization for almost 30 years, retiring from active duty on July 1, 1993. During those years I lived in many places: San Antonio, TX; Wichita Falls, TX; Fairfield, CA; Tokyo, Japan; Denver, CO; DaNang, Vietnam; Phoenix, AZ; Austin, TX; Angeles City, Philippines; Kadena, Okinawa; Fairfield, CA (again); Weisbaden, Germany; Albuquerque, NM; Honolulu, HI; and finally Las Vegas, NV where I've lived since July 1992. While I was in the service I obtained a BA in Business Administration and an MBA in Finance all largely paid for by the Air Force and the VA, so no student loans to repay. I've been married since 1980 and have just one Son who works and lives in Honolulu, Hawaii, has a wife and 3 children, and affords us a perfect excuse to visit there each year. After retiring from the Air Force, I worked for the State of Nevada in three different jobs for the next 20 years. I retired from the State of Nevada in July 2013 after spending the last seven years employed in the Nevada State Treasurer's Office. Fortunately, my health is still relatively good so I'm enjoying retirement. I'm a Red Cross Volunteer a couple of days each week at the Nellis Air Force Base pharmacy and I shoot competitively, both rifle and pistol, a couple of nights per week as well. Other than that I do whatever I want which includes a little of this, a little of that and a whole lot of nothing. Life is pretty much stress free these days after having worked all my life from age 16 to several months shy of age 70. I usually make one trip a year back to Grand Rapids for a couple of weeks around Labor Day to visit my 3 youn...Expand for more
ger brothers and 2 younger sisters (there were 3 originally) who still live and work there. My parents have both passed away (Mother in 1972 at age 48; Father in 1983 at age 63). High School is still a pleasant memory for me. I've lost track of virtually everyone except for a few close friends. Don't know how many years I have left on this earth but I intend to enjoy them as much as I can. Too many of our classmates have passed away, sad to say. I realize we all get our turn at that eventually. I'm hoping to postpone the inevitable a while longer. Wishing you all good health! UPDATE: January 2019 - Still alive and in good health at Age 75 now. Yikes! I've slowed down a bit but not that much. I still Volunteer a couple days each week and shoot competitively as well. Typically I'm the oldest shooter at every competition; not sure if that's something to be proud of or not. Lost a younger Sister early in 2016. She passed away of Brain Cancer at age 60. There were 7 of us siblings and she was the 3rd youngest so it was a shock to the rest of us. RIP Sis! I did make a visit to Grand Rapids the last 2 weeks of September and reconnected with some old friends and most of my family members. It was nice and I hope it's possible to make more of these visits in the future, health permitting. Lost several more Classmates during the year; always sad to learn of these passings. Those events remind me of my own mortality and make me ponder how many years are left on life's calendar for myself? No sense dwelling on that for very long; instead I focus on continuing to enjoy my current life. Wishing the same for all my Classmates who are still hanging in there. Happy New Year!
