Jack's Story
After serving my sentance at Sherman Grammar school and Marina Jr. High, I was sentanced to three years at Galileo High school. I was not Italian, or Catholic so I already had two strikes against me. I basically fought my way through the the 10th grade. I was jumped and beaten on in the bathrooms, hallways and classrooms. I won most of my fights and by the 11th grade, most of these kids from North Beach decided it was best to leave me alone. I also joined the Warlords which seemed to help keep the status quo. I lower my eyes modestly when I tell you that I, out of necessisity developed a talent for boxing. I would give them so many rights, they'd be begging for a left. I prided myself in not starting fights, but finishing them.
My Scottish Irish family really held to the American principles that many gave lip service too. I never heard a prejudiced word against any religion, or race in my house. I developed some minor prejudice after traveling to 50 countries, and can hide it most of the time. I joined the Army and became a paratrooper, becoming 180 Lbs. of rompen, stompen airborne hell in the 82nd Airborne. I made 28 parachute dr...Expand for more
ops, and became an expert with my weapons. If any of you remember Bill Blethan he was also in the 82nd., during my tour.
I worked for TWA loading cargo aircraft while attending SF City College(also attended NC State at Ft.Bragg). Lucky for me the Vietnam war wasn't going full swing while I served. My shift was averaging 8 human remains from the war being shipped back home. I hired on a DOD contract and went to Vietnam for 7 years. Stayed over seas for 20 years and traveled to 50 countries. Lived in Saigon, Bangkok, Singapore and Saudi Arabia. I have played my blues harmonica in bars & clubs in SF, Bangkok, Cambridge, Saudi, and Austin. Writing is sort of a hobby with me (when I can find an editor) and I've been published 15 times. Jack Johnstone
I'll never forget dumping the neighborhood bully over the railing in front of the Octagon House, or giving a speach on Beatniks at Galileo.
Burying our beer under the pier at Aquatic Park, so the tide would keep it cold. Drinking it at lunch time and doing some incredible art, right after lunch in our art class. They hung my stuff in the hallways. Such an honor! All done with a buzz on.
